Mustad Power Grip Pin KVD Soft Plastics Hooks

Today’s review is on another new product from Mustad, the Power Grip Pin-KVD Soft Plastics Hook. I needed to replace some EWG’s this year so I figured I might as well try these and see if they really work.

The way these things are designed, they have a small piece of hook wire welded to the shank of the hook on the underside near the hook eye that sticks out about 3/16 of an inch. You thread your soft plastic on the hook just as you would any other making sure to get it over the pin and then just bring it back into place. The small reveal of the pin holds the plastic in place and doesn’t allow it to easily slide up or down the hook shank.

You use these hooks in all the same applications that you do other ordinary EWG’s like weightless Senko’s, Carolina rigs or Texas rigs. The pin doesn’t interfere at all with the worm weight or with the action of the bait. It just keeps the plastic in place.

I decided to try this first with a weightless  Strike King Ocho. The pin did exactly what it was supposed to do and didn’t allow my Ocho to move around on the hook. The first strike demonstrated how this can be helpful in maintaining your baits. I got hit, set the hook and reeled in a chunky 2 ½ pounder.

When I took the hook out of his mouth, the Ocho had not slid up the line nor had it bunched up in the bend of the hook. Instead, the bait was pushed forward slightly but neither end of it was dislodged off of the hook. This was the case with every fish that I caught that day using the KVD Soft Plastic Hook.

I’m going to be using these as I need to replace hooks. While they aren’t the most high-tech part of your gear, they do what they say they’ll do, keep your plastics in place better than other hooks.

See ya’ on the water …
