Cavitron Buzzbait Review

It’s almost summer around here although we are experiencing another cold front and some unseasonably high rain totals, I had to look at another lure category that is just plain fun to fish, the buzz-bait.

I picked up some Cavitron buzzers and have now had them for over a year and have caught fish on them. So let’s get down to business and take a closer look at them.

Construction

One of the considerations the angler has when choosing a buzzbait is how much disturbance it will make as it’s retrieved across the surface of the water. The single blade of this lure has four holes drilled through the blade which does increase the amount of bubbles generated by the spinning of the blade.

This can be good and bad in that it seems to really turn the fish on some days while turning them off other days.

The head of the lure is a thin wedge shape that does help it get up to plane quickly and stay there at low speeds, lower than most other buzzers that I have fished. The down side to this is that the head doesn’t really look like anything. It has no eyes or distinguishing features that might add to it’s appeal.

Hooks

The hooks on the Cavitron are made by Gamakatsu and as expected, are sharp and ready to go. I have never felt the need to use a trailer hook with these baits as the hook rides a little further back and lower in the water due to the bent wire design of the frame. I also believe that this feature, more than any other single design characteristic, is responsible for the Cavitron’s better than average hook-up ratio.

When I originally got these, there were very limited color options. I got the Chartreuse White and the White, both in 1/4 oz. Cavitron has introduced more colors both in their skirts and on their blades. However, al off the colors are still pretty basic compared to some of the competitors offerings.

Buzzbaits are known as big fish baits, especially during the summer and choosing the right one can really help. While I do enjoy fishing the Cavitron, it hasn’t been exactly bullet-proof. Of the two baits that I obtained, one of them didn’t run very true and took some adjustment to get it to track true which can be frustrating. That same bait lost its skirt sooner than I would have liked. It’s not really a big deal to change, but it is an annoyance when it needs to be replaced after just a few fish.

For our MVF rating system, I am giving the Cavitron buzzbait 3 stars.

See ya’ on the water …

Comments

  1. HMMMM 3 out or 5 stars –Not that good for a bait that was rated by Field and Stream and amongst others as one of the TOP 30 Baits Of All Time.. The Cavitron is the most recognized buzz bait on the market For good reason -It is a bait that flat out catches fish and is made of the best components you can buy. As for colors. Colors sell and catch fishermen -not fish. Our reputation at Megastrike is world renowned for catching fish -not fishermen.

I have studied for years of how the color spectrum works under water. Different colors change under certain given light penetrations and water clarities so silhouettes are seen more than definitions. Five colors are basically all that is needed —
White -you can throw under all daytime conditions
    –Chartreuse- mostly muddy water conditions
    -black-low light conditions
-chartreuse and white combo- stained water and the Ghost Minnow-(shad pattern) under clear water conditions..

As for the skirt coming off –Hmmm dont know how that happened .

As for the bait not running true-that usually means that it is being retrieved to fast..

I am not hear to bash the author but to answer any questions or doubts that may hinder the reputation of our products.. http://www.megastrike.com to watch a video of the cavitron Thank You
    As for the skirt

    • Hey Bobby,
First off, we always welcome comments even if they don’t agree with our standpoint. This is especially true for our friends in the industry, so it is great to hear from you.

As for the review, first let me say that anything 3 stars and up is a good review from us. On top of that, we DO use the Cavitron on a regular basis and have had success with it.

In the interest of fairness, and to get more awareness to your product, how would you like to do an article on tips and tricks for using the bait? Maybe you could clarify color choices, retrieval speeds, and the like to help people catch tons of fish with the bait. Email through our contact form and let’s talk about it!
