Davis Bait X Swim Screw Lock Swimbait Hooks

Today we’re going to take another swim-bait hook out on the water and see how it performs. As usual, we have our favorite in this category but we do, in the interest of fair play, like to take a look at other competitive offerings. We picked up some Davis Bait X Swim Screw Lock Swimbait Hook.

These hooks are available in hook sizes from 4/0 to 8/0 and in weights from 1/16 to 3/8 which is a wide range of choices. Unfortunately, they don’t have anything smaller than a 4/0 which is a bit limiting for finesse style bait. But let’s see how they perform on the water.

The Bait X has a screw lock attached to the eye of the hook although it really isn’t as precise as the Mustad with the centering pin. It does however hold the bait on the hook well. The angle of the hook point is just right for skin hooking your swimbait and does a good job of not popping out of whatever lure you’re using even as you run your bait through cover.

The Davis also runs and stays vertical in the water on the retrieve. There are several swimbait hooks out there that only add to a lure rolling over but this is one of the better ones in this category. The weight is fixed and positioned on the hook shank in such a way as to promote a horizontal position in the water for whatever bait you decide to put on. Again, a plus for the Bait X. However, because the weight is fixed, you can’t change the angle of the bait on the retrieve at all.

The hook itself is sharp and has proven to be durable with repeated uses. All in all, the Davis Bait X Swim Screw Lock Swimbait Hook is a good product that doesn’t disappoint but at the same time, doesn’t really excel.

See ya’ on the water …
