Most people know Henry Winkler as the lovable character from Happy Days Arthur Fonzarelli. Or perhaps you know him from his recent gigs as a director.
Whatever the case may be, you may not know that Mr. Winkler is an avid fly fisherman. I’ve decided to review this book after reading a similar review in a well known fly fishing publication, which shall remain nameless. I felt their assessment of the book was a little unfair and heavy handed.
Sure, fly fishing and literature go together like Hemmingway and bull fighting, but since when did we become Pulitzer judges?
Yes, to some degree I’ve Never Met An Idiot On The River uses analogies and visuals with plenty of mileage on them. He talks about how great Montana is (we all know that), and draws parallels between learning to cast and his career. Ok, I get it.
Here is what I like about this book. It’s an easy read, and it is a well known guy outside of the fly fishing world writing about fly fishing. He’s had a long career, and if he wants to write a book about what makes fly fishing special to him, I’m totally fine with that. Maybe this book isn’t for the fly fishing purists, but another audience entirely.
Whatever the case, I enjoyed this book, I think you will too.
