One of my favorite summer time baits is of course the buzzbait. I really enjoy catching bass on these lures and have tried just about every buzzer out there. Today’s review is on the River2Sea Crystal Buzz.
We have reviewed other products from this company and found each of them to be well-executed, thoughtful designs, not to mention they catch fish! With that in mind, I was eager to get my hands on the Crystal Buzz to see what it was like.
Crystal Buzz Blades
The River2Sea uses a dual counter-rotating blade for creating its unique buzzing noise. The blades are separated by a spring that keeps
tension between the blades, gives it that little squealing sound and allows just enough space when slightly compressed for the blades to come in contact with one another to also emit a clacking sound.
The blades are not drilled like some others but still put out a decent bubble trail. Just in front of the first blade is a bearing supported weed bead. All of these qualities together give this lure a combination of sounds that distinguishes it from most of its competitors.
Crystal Buzz Construction
As far as the other components, the Crystal Buzz has a premium long shank Big Bite hook that is very sharp and ready for business out of the box. The skirt is hand tied and extremely secure. The head of this bait is exceptionally realistic as it is designed using a bismuth/tin alloy that is encased by polycarbonate with features like 3D eyes, scale patterns and gill slits.
We found the Crystal Buzz to cast well for a 1/2 ounce buzzer. As anyone who has ever fished this style of bait knows, the blades can really cut down your distance due to the inherent wind resistance. I don’t know the specifics on the aerodynamics but I would have to put this bait in the top 5% of lures in this class with this weight as far as distance. That fact has proven to be one of the exceptional characteristics of the River2Sea.
The Crystal Buzz gets up to plane easily, runs true out of the box and doesn’t take a sharp rip from the angler when it hits the water to get it going. Simply engage your reel just before splash-down, instigate a medium retrieve and you’re fishing.
In our testing we found that this lure does in fact get through grass and other surface vegetation fairly well. The bead on the front helps to deflect some obstructions from fouling the blades. Not to say that it keeps everything out, it doesn’t. It will though, keep a percentage of muck from interfering with the operation of the blades allowing you to keep your retrieve going longer than similar baits.
In our time using the Crystal Buzz, our hook-up ratio was excellent. The stock hook does precisely what it is supposed to do. It penetrates quickly and cleanly offering the angler the best shot at landing the fish.
If you’ve had problems with using buzzbaits for varying reasons, this is one, that in my opinion, is the least prone to exasperating issues and is an absolute pleasure to use. There are no tricks, modifications or other concerns that need to be addressed by the angler prior to use. Just tie it on, throw it out and hold on for the strike.
