Fends Off Competitors To Keep The Lead And Take The Victory
It was a big weekend for former Classic winner Alton Jones, as he punched his ticket for next year’s Classic by taking home a big win in Florida.
It was a sweet piece of redemption for Jones, having come so close to winning this exact tournament last year. That memory had to be in the back of his mind as he had to fend off so many anglers making a hard charge at his lead on the final day.
While I am sure Alton was sweating a good bit, in the end, he was able to keep the lead by more than a pound and take home a trophy.
Alton Jones’ Strategy For Winning
Jones had the opportunity to play to one of his strengths in this tournament—sight fishing.
They key to his victory was getting around good fish wanting to spawn, and trying to get that bite. He keyed on larger fish, as opposed to concentrations of fish, in the Lake George area of the river system.
His primary lure for the tournament was a 6-inch Junebug Colored Yum Dinger, which he said brought in all of his fish above 4 pounds.
Other anglers were not able to land as many large fish as Alton because it seemed the field was keying in on concentrations of fish as opposed to the bigger bass. Alton had the right strategy, worked it well, and took home a great win.
After a very exciting classic, and a fantastic tournament in Florida, the Elite Series is really starting to heat up and looks to be extremely exciting this year.
