Jackall Lures has been making quality hard and soft baits for some time. We have reviewed a number of them and have come to appreciate the quality and innovation they bring to the table. However, they haven’t entered the wire bait market until this year with the introduction of the Super Eruption Spinnerbait. We saw these at ICAST and were immediately intrigued by the intricate detailing as well as the departures from traditional design, not to mention the inclusion of quality components throughout the bait.
Cody Meyer was in the booth and took some time to share his take on the Super Eruption with us as well as how he liked to use it when on the water. All this did was add to the anticipation we had for getting this lure tied on and spending time with it on the water.
Awesome Construction
Jackall put a lot of time into the construction of this bait which includes, reverse teardrop blades that put off an amazing amount of vibration and flash at any retrieve speed, an exclusive .08mm SUS304 stainless steel wire that enhances vibration and provides excellent shape retention, a uniquely shaped, realistically painted head that is resistant to snagging, a simple but functional trailer keeper and a super sharp Owner heavy wire hook.
The blades are a custom made product just for this bait. The sizes for the 3/8 ounce are a number 4 on the back with a number 3 in front. The end of the wire is soldered closed which prevents the angler from changing blade sizes the traditional way.
We suppose that you could take the factory blade off by opening the split ring on the swivel but you might want to fish this bait as is, out of the package, prior to modifying it. Jackall employs what they call a High Balance Arm Angle which translates to the upper arm having a slight downward bend in it where the bottom bead, which is fixed, attaches to the arm.
There are some excellent colors with some that feature blades that are painted on one side to enhance the overall appearance of the bait as it’s moving through the water. Basic blade colors are a gold and a silver with combinations of the two on a few of the patterns not to mention one that uses a black nicked on one of the blades for low light or night fishing.
The Super Eruption currently comes in two weights, 1/2 and 3/8 with the colors being offered in both sizes being the same.
What’s It Designed For?
This bait was designed for dirty water, low light conditions and cold water situations. In spite of that, we got it on the water as soon as we got home from ICAST just to see how it performed knowing that fishing the heat of the summer was not necessarily what Jackall had in mind when they designed this bait.
We started fishing the 3/8 Super Eruption on a 7 foot, medium heavy rod using 15# co-polymer line throwing it as the sun started going down. The only thing that we did to the lure was trim the skirt a bit.
We didn’t put a trailer hook or a trailer on as we like to use baits right out of the package for a while in an effort to see how well thought out the engineering is on a new bait. Besides, we like a bait that requires no more effort than tying it on to fish effectively, don’t you?
What’s It Like on the Water?
The Jackall Super Eruption Spinnerbait claims to have a hard thumping action. We gotta tell you that if anything, this is an understatement. This bait has more thump to it than any comparable sized spinnerbait we have ever tested bar none.
We don’t say that lightly as we aren’t prone to exaggeration or hyperbole. But in this case, there is no more direct way to put it. The thump you get has to be felt to be appreciated particularly from a relatively small profile bait. The blades start up almost immediately on the retrieve, stay spinning even while crawling the bait as well as easily helicoptering if allowed to just die and drop.
Incidentally, you might think that all that would make for considerable resistance on the retrieve but it’s surprisingly easy to bring this bait back to the boat. We haven’t gotten a chance to fish the 1/2 ounce model yet, only the 3/8. But this little bait is very efficient down to about 10 feet on 15# line. Because you can crawl it without the blades stopping on you, you just have to allow it to sink to the desired depth.
The shape and size of the blades don’t provide so much lift as to make it rise uncontrollably out of your desired depth range.
How we like to fish it
We’ve fished the Eruption using several retrieves including, straight at different speeds, a yo-yo, a herky jerky stop and go, a lift and drop as well as combinations of all of them together. It’s hard to pin it down to what has been the most successful as they have all produced fish.
If we had to make the call, we would have to go with a moderate speed, stop and go, yo-yo type retrieve similar to using a walk the dog style bait. That sounds like a handful but once you get the hang of it, it becomes pretty natural.
While the skirt material doesn’t appear to be out of the norm, it does flare and contract well when you pause for a second every handle crank or so while you are lifting it slightly and letting it settle. The majority of our strikes have come just as we start the bait forward again. This bait comes through cover well and really does stand up to lots of abuse.
The Bluegill color is the one that we have used the most and while it has all kinds of tooth marks on the blades, the head is almost pristine, the wire is still in great shape, the skirt has held up well and the hook is still sharp. We’re still wondering what its going to take to destroy the Super Eruption ‘cause we’ve been tryin’ but haven’t succeeded yet.
The Jackall Super Eruption Spinnerbait retails for about $16 most places. That may sound kind of steep but this bait is very well thought out and more importantly, implemented. Used for its intended purpose/s, you’ll be hard pressed to find another spinnerbait that will outperform it. This bait is easy to throw all day, flat out catches fish, can be used in a number of situations as well as being fairly easy to learn to fish. Novices to experienced anglers can use this bait effectively.
The Jackall Super Eruption Spinnerbait is a total package. Its versatility at any retrieve speed is the least obvious but greatet attribute in an exceptionally well put together bait.
