Dropping Bombs with the Missile Baits Baby D Bomb

IMG_2407We’re going to assume that the vast majority of you have at least experimented with using creature baits at one point or another. Maybe you’ve had some success with them, maybe not. Have you ever tried the Missile Baits Baby D Bomb? If the answer is no, read on …

The Baby D Bomb measures 3.65 inches but seems even smaller than that. It could be that because only a little more than half of that length is taken up by the body, with the rest being the appendages, that it simply looks smaller than its actual length.

We have been fishing this bait for the better part of 2014, through all the seasons and are very impressed with what it can do as a stand alone lure as well as being a complement for other lures.

Fishing the Baby is a simple but very effective way to fill your limit with the rigging options being uncomplicated yet varied.

Rigging the Baby D Bomb

Mating this bait with the Missile Baits Warlock head is a complete no-brainer. The design of that shakey head is ideal in size, hook size and has the right components to make the most of the Baby D.

You just screw the butt end of the Baby onto the small screw lock keeper, run the hook point through the bait, skin hook it and you’re ready to go. We recommend using the 3/16 version with this bait to maximize its ability to glide on the fall which in turn makes the claws flap enticingly while it’s swimming.

At rest, the claws stand up in a defensive posture that just begs bass to crush it which they readily do.

We can’t really put our fingers on precisely what makes this lure as effective as it is. It could be the action of the claws and the other two appendages, the ribbed body which does an excellent job of holding and releasing air bubbles or scent, or the colors which are all well thought out and executed.

We suppose it could be a combination of all these features in conjunction with its relatively small profile.

When We Fish It

Whatever the reason, during pre-spawn, bass choke it as if it were an easy meal. During the spawn, they crush it if it enters their nests. Post-spawn they smoke it as if their very existence depended on eating this thing. Summers, the bass gobble it up like it was an appetizer and fall they just can’t seem to help themselves ‘cause its there.

You can drag the Baby, swim it, yo-yo it, Texas rig it, Carolina rig it or any retrieve in between.

When the fish are being particularly picky or finicky, the Baby D Bomb is at its best. When they aren’t near as discerning, you’ll catch ‘em on this bait as long as you present it the way they are wanting it at that time. All it takes is a little experimentation to figure that out.

As an all season bait, the Baby D Bomb doesn’t disappoint.

You can rig it on a Warlock Head or a football head, use it as a jig trailer or on the back of a spinnerbait, go heavy or light with your weights, fish it shallow or deep or pitch or flip it. It is at home doing so many different things that we’ve gotten to the point that we always have one tied on.

The Baby D Bomb’s construction is similar to all the other Missile Bait offerings that we’ve tried. The butt section is good and firm to keep it on the hook while the body of the bait is soft and supple while remaining surprisingly durable.

This is not one of those baits that you’ll be replacing every time you either get a bite or catch a fish. No one hit wonder here. These things last very well when compared to their competitors.

Long Term Results

We’ve been fishing the Baby for several months now which is why we can say that in our experience with this bait, the simpler rigging methods have been the ones that have gotten us the most bites.

Number one of which is using it with the Warlock Head. By changing your retrieve, you can leave it in place and just shake the bait or drag it slowly along the bottom with the occasional sharp jerk or employ a slow methodical lift then drop yo-yo type retrieve or speed any of these up. By changing your cadence, you’ll pick up on what the bass are looking for.

Number two would have to be simply Texas rigging the bait with a wide gap hook and 3/16 weight which allows you to do the same kinds of things through grass.

Missile Baits also produces a larger sibling of this bait called the D Bomb which, if you follow the Elite Series, was one of Ish Monroe’s key baits when he won on the Big O a few years ago.

As far as colors go, Bourbon and Love Bug have produced equally well for us. This has been true whether we were fishing during the day or at night.

The Missile Baits Baby D Bomb always seems to come through for us as it manages to put fish on the end of our line.

If you haven’t tried this bait yet, our only question to you is … why?
