Wacky rigging soft plastics is a mainstay in clear water situations because it catches fish. The terminal tackle, in this case the wacky jig head, has seen several changes over the course of its introduction.
The Gamakatsu G-Finesse Series Wacky Jig Head is one of those products that takes a different slant on this proven technique.
The G-Finesse comes in four sizes, 1/16, 3/32, 1/8 and 3/16. All of these feature the same specially designed hook for the jig head. The recessed line tie sits at about 40 degrees with a pair of titanium weed guards molded securely in the head of the jig.
This package of features makes the jig more weedless than a number of its competitors according to Gamakatsu.
We all know that Gamakatsu made a name for themselves by providing quality hooks that are sticky sharp out of the package. The hook on the G-Finesse is no exception to that rule. It will penetrate with very little effort on the anglers part.
Does it work?
The real question is whether or not this design can be used in and around light to moderate cover or will it attract every piece of snag-able gunk within a quarter mile?
In our testing, the double weed-guard on the G-Finesse does its job admirably. This is not to say that we would throw this jig head in the thickest slop on the lake. It isn’t made for that. It is made to be used around sparse to moderate cover and will push the boundaries to moderately heavy if worked carefully through the briar patches.
That weed-guard serves another purpose that you won’t find mentioned much in any of the ads for it. Namely, it helps keep the hook in the fishes mouth. Due to its relative stoutness, it doesn’t bend out of the way like a limp noodle.
It stays pretty much in place which almost pins the hook in the fishes face between the hook point and the two prongs of the weed-guard making it more difficult for a bass to throw it.
The oval shape of the head is another feature that aids the Gamakatsu in coming through cover. It gently deflects off of would be snags while you’re working your bait which allows you to let it sink into those honey holes in the cover where the big girls live. It slides nicely over submerged branches as well as snaking through sparse grass or stick-ups.
It can handle more than you think
The hook itself is a good platform for a majority of worms made to wacky rig. It’s gap is wide enough to support most of the thicker plastics even when your bait bunches up on the hook set. We’ve only lost a handful of fish using the G-Finesse with most of those as a result of using baits that we knew were to large for the hook but we were pushing the envelope.
Hey, you never know until you try, right?
The G-Finesse Wacky Jig Head not only works well with worm type baits but is an excellent choice for small to medium sized soft plastic minnow style lures. Just nose hook ‘em and work them the same way you do a worm. You’ll be surprised how effective this little trick is, especially if you’ve never tried it!
The only questionable part of this jig head is the lack of color options. We would like to see more than just Black and Green Pumpkin offered.
As far as price goes, the G-Finesse retail for about $7 for a pack of three which equates to roughly $2.33 per. This isn’t the most expensive out there but it isn’t the least expensive either.
The Gamakatsu G-Finesse Series Wacky Jig Head is, in our opinion, one of the better wacky heads on the market. You may have your favorite but this one is certainly worth a try to see what you might be missing.
