From Dusk Till Dawn: Finding The Best Bass Fishing Times

Here it is, the first week of October in good ole So-Cal, which has the potential to be one of the best bass fishing times. I went fishing the other night expecting to find some changes in the lake and did indeed. What I found was that the vegetation has been receding somewhat although, due to the fact that it is still hot during the days, not as much as would have thought.

No matter, I grabbed my gear and got busy. The first thing that I noticed was that there was absolutely no activity on the surface. No fish breaking, no bugs lighting to drink, nothing. Usually when this happens it means there won’t be much happening as far as top-water bassin. Sure enough, the first hour went by without so much as a single boil and with the sun going down, I knew it was time to switch lures and go to something else.

I already had a swim-bait and a swim-jig ties on so I picked up those rods and started looking for some likely spots to through them. My favorite being against stick-ups, areas where different kinds of weeds meet to provide cover for bass and staging areas where bass can get to deeper water quickly. It took some time but I finally managed to pick up a couple of fish by fishing painfully slow. The rest of the night was just like this with a couple more changes that included the ball and chain: a Carolina rig, and a wacky worm.

The final tally for the night was just five bass. It was very much worthwhile just to be out there and using different techniques to wind up with a full bag. To me it’s always satisfying to make the adjustments necessary to catch fish. However, this trip also brought up another change in the year that is inevitable. That being the need to change from dusk to dawn to give yourself the best chance for catching the most fish.

How about you? What do you find to be the best bass fishing times this time of year? Let us know in the comments.
