My son and I were talking a few days ago about all that we have seen that has come and gone in the fishing world including those products that were brand new a lot of years ago and are now staples in our fishing. One of those that has survived virtually unchanged is Power Pro braided line.
When we originally started using this line it was after having tried several others and being frustrated with the performance of those. I know that this is one of those subjects that tends to be much more subjective than objective for a lot of folks but all we can do is give it to ya’ll straight and see what happens.
I’ve got to tell you that we don’t use braid all that much in our fishing. But when conditions dictate, Power Pro is our choice. And what are those conditions you’re wondering? Usually it has to do with fishing heavy slop, lily pads or other dense vegetation.
For this kind of fishing, you need a line that gives you better control when you get bit. Due to its lack of stretch, braid is the way to go. Furthermore, it tends to cut through slop better than either mono or flouro’s.
Power Pro Braid
So why do we use this particular line? Because it’s never given us any problems. We tend to use only the higher pound test in braid so I can’t speak to the lower end of the spectrum. In my experience, the 40 and 65 will accommodate just about anything you run across when chasing bass that are buried in the thickest mess on the lake.
There are, like with all lines, some inherent drawbacks to braid. One of them being the dye that is used to color the line tends to fade and bleed. I have seen some braids that make a mess out of you and your equipment within the first fifteen minutes or so. We haven’t had this issue with the Power Pro. Yes, over time it does indeed fade but what braid doesn’t?
Another common complaint when using braid is that it is noisy as it goes through your guides. Again, true. Braided lines are noisy compared to mono or flouro. Unfortunately, that’s the nature of the beast. However, I can’t think of an instance where the fish complained about this to me so I’ll just file this one under the proverbial “oh well” heading and move on.
One of the best parts of the Power Pro is the new packaging that is used. Not only does it provide a built in spooling station that really does work, it also utilizes a handy line cutter for when you’re through spooling your reel. Too bad all lines aren’t packaged this way!
Obviously this isn’t the newest braid on the market. There have been a lot introduced since this one. Some use more fibers in their braiding process, others use technologies to make the line smoother and rounder, others, including Power Pro, have introduced new colors. With all this, I still haven’t found one that I am going to replace it with.
There may come a time when I’ll have to retract this, but for now, Power Pro is still my braided line of choice when all factors are taken into consideration.
