Have you ever wished for a simple piece of terminal tackle to fill a specific need that does one thing and one thing only but does it very well? I know that we have. In particular, I’ve always wanted something that protects my knot, allows soft plastic jerkbaits along with other weightless plastics to slide through weeds easier without getting a bunch balled up on the front of the bait and, just for hoots and giggles, extends the life of those baits a little longer while avoiding any negative affect on the action of the bait.
Yeah, I know I said one thing, but I meant to say, one item that accomplishes all these things. Is there any such product?
We believe that we have found one. The Paychech Baits Head Case.
One simple little inexpensive gizmo that does everything on my wish list. It’s just a piece of plastic molded into the shape of a worm weight with a spring style screw in keeper that you thread on your line prior to tying on your hook. Then just rig your weightless soft plastic on the hook, screw the Head Case into the nose of the bait and you’re ready to go.
We have tested this do-dad on any number of soft plastics now and have come to the conclusion that its ease of use coupled with the advantages it provides, is a must have in our tackle boxes.
The best feature of the Head Case is that while it does add a miniscule amount of extra weight, it isn’t enough to make any noticeable difference in the performance characteristics of any of the baits that we’ve used it with. This was our biggest concern but that has been laid to rest.
Not to belabor the point but the advantages to using this over going with nothing on your plastics is something that you have to experience for yourself. The cool part is that a pack of five of these will only set you back about $4.
You’ll find that when a fish strikes and the inevitable head shakes occur, the Head Case will not allow your plastics to be summarily thrown off your line. It keeps the head of the bait intact as it slides up your line so that all you have to do is rethread it on your hook. This saves you baits which consequently saves you money. Not to mention that gut wrenching feeling of having your last productive weightless soft plastic destroyed by 9:30 a.m. Yes, we’ve had the same thing happen to us a number of times. The reality is that it plain sucks!
Since we began using the Head Case, we have had baits last several times longer per bait as opposed to traditional rigging with nothing but the lure and hook.
Furthermore, it does an excellent job of really cutting down on the amount of weeds that can build up on the nose of a bait. Because most soft plastics tend to be somewhat, if not completely blunt, this thing works to mitigate both the accumulation of gunk on the front as well as the stress that puts on your bait.
Have you ever retrieved a weightless soft plastic in a weedy environment only to find that the pressure from pulling it through the slop has caused the lure to ride down on the hook? So have I. Not anymore however, as the Head Case eliminates this problem.
While the Paycheck Baits Head Case will probably never be considered, “cool” or “sexy”, it fills a specific need very well as it accomplishes what it’s designed to do without being a pain to use. In my book, this makes it at least a must try for any angler throwing weightless soft plastics.
