The Energy E101, Quantum Reels Go To The Next Level

I’ve always had an affinity for Quantum fishing reels. I had to replace two reels this season and stared looking at my options for what I was going to use these reels to cast. After narrowing the field down a bit, I went to Bass Pro Shops and spent two hours looking at all the reels that I had selected and of course talking to the salesman all to decide which reels I was going to purchase. I settled on the Energy in the left hand retrieve and have now had and been using them for the last nine months.

I have to say that as of this moment, I have eight Quantum fishing reels in my rack and have never had a problem with any of them. I know that this heavily influenced my decision because I had and continue to have a lot of confidence in these reels. The other main priority for me when I got these reels was what I was going to be throwing with them, on what length and action rods and what pound line I would be using on them. After all of these considerations were factored in along with the time I spent with them in my hand, the decision was pretty clear cut and I got the Energy PT.

Check Out The Specs

This reel weights in a very svelte 7.7 ounces bare and comes with features like a lube port, multi-disc drag with a reported 19 pounds of pressure, a swept handle and other features designed to make it as strong as it is smooth. At a price point under two-hundred dollars, it is reasonable for what you are getting. With all that having been said, nobody, myself included, care about any of that more than how the reel casts and handles fish once you’re hooked up.

Performance Is What Matters Most

Having now fished this reel for a bit over nine months, I truly am happy with my purchase. The Energy  is very smooth in all operational capacities. It casts for distance no matter the weight of the lure. Whether you are using a wacky worm or something like a half-ounce crankbait, as long as you’re rod can handle the weight the Energy PT can to. The handles on both of my reels have no back-play whatsoever and provide solid hook-sets every time I swing. I use the left-hand version although I am right-handed and don’t have any problems with the ACS side cover interfering with anything. While it does stick out a little bit more than most reels, over the years I have come to appreciate the ability to make braking adjustments on the fly without having to remove any side-covers to do so. I haven’t had any problems at all figuring out and setting the cast controls, probably due to the fact that I have earlier generations of this reel. I have had some friends use them during this time period and they have had no problems either.

Through all the fish that I have caught on Quantum fishing reels no issue of any kind has surfaced. I am thoroughly enjoying them every time I go fishing and they fill the bill for the purposes for which they were acquired. I regularly hose my reels down with fresh water after fishing and that hasn’t presented any issues either. I have yet to have to take them apart to give them a complete cleaning but after having done so on my earlier generation Quantums, I again don’t anticipate any problems.

Spend More Time Fishing, Less Time Messing With Your Reel

The bottom line is that these reels have done everything they are advertised to do and everything that I got them specifically to do without so much as a whimper. They are easy to use and maintain, they are comfortable to fish with all day or night, they handle a wide range of lure weights, the cast controls adjust easily without having to take the reel apart in any way, they are strong enough to horse fish out of nasty situations, they look good and they do all this at a reasonable price. For me, the Quantum Energy E101 SPT is one of those purchases that you’re happy with every time you get them in your hand and if there is a new reel in your future, this one is worth at least a serious look.

See ya on the water…
