The Revenge Buzzbait

Here we go again gang, let’s look at another summer time lure, the Revenge Buzzbait. Yes, summer time is buzzbait time. The trouble is that we are still waiting for summer around here.

Overnight temps as I write this are in the high 50’s. Considering it’s almost June, this is beyond cool, it is bordering on frigid. Anyway, let’s look at the Revenge and see how it stacks up against other lures in this genre.

We choose the Revenge in the 1/4 oz size because it has the features that we look for when shopping for baits in this class. It is also available in 3/8 and 1/2 oz. To begin with, the Revenge utilizes the bent wire design that I am so fond of in buzzbaits. The wire used really creates a very nice vibration in the water and will stand up to some vicious strikes. It is tuned right out of the package and runs true without having to mess with it. In my mind, this is a great plus.

Bait Construction

The blade on the Revenge is drilled with two holes which, on the retrieve, leaves a bubble trail behind the bait. It does not however have a clacker or a ball to increase the squeaking. This translates to a more subtle disturbance than some other buzzbaits out there but that didn’t dissuade the fish at all from slamming this bait. For that matter, the relative stealth of this buzzbait may have been the reason for the strikes. It does make a nice contrast to more traditionally noisy versions.

Another reason we choose the Revenge is the detail in the head of the bait. As opposed to having a simple, painted wedge for a head this buzzer truly looks like a baitfish complete with the eyes and good variations in color. Combine that with the available skirt colors, a sharp hook, and you have an all around well executed package.

Bait Action

The Revenge gets up to plane quickly without fuss and will stay there at surprisingly low speeds. Increasing the speed of your retrieve does not affect this bait even in the lighter size which is what we choose. A nice side note on the Revenge. During our testing, one of the things that we like to do with buzzbaits is to see how readily we can steer them around obstacles during our retrieve. The Revenge handled these directional changes without so much as a whimper and just kept churning along happily.

Usually, casting buzzbaits means that due to their relatively high wind resistance, you just can’t get light weight versions very far. The Revenge is above average in this department and we have no complaints with the distance we were able to attain throwing this lure.

As the weather warms, the bite will do nothing but heat up on buzzbaits and I will be throwing the Revenge more and more. It is a very well-balanced lure that performs just the way you expect it to.

The Revenge buzzbait earns 3.75 stars on our MVF rating system.
