The Spro Little John crankbait is not a new bait, but since I have been having some tremendous success with it lately, I thought it worth a review.
The Little John is different from the Fat John in the depth that it dives. This bait is designed to dive in the 15-20 foot range, while the Fat John is a shallow runner. Having the Little John in your tackle box alongside the Fat John makes for a dynamite pairing that will put fish in the boat all day.
Bait Construction
Interestingly enough, Spro used a computer chip board for the lip of this bait. The intent was to give the bait more feel, and to be more durable. They’ve accomplished both on this one.
When I burn crankbaits, it is typically in and around rocky points. I allow the bait to bounce off of the rocks so it looks like a small foraging bait fish. This is a fantastic action, but it can and will take its tole on your baits. I’ve chipped and cracked more than a few lips in my time on the water.
I have yet to have that issue with the Little John.
Throw in the mix a set of razor sharp Gamakatsu trebles, and you have a very well constructed bait.
Weight Transfer System
Another unique feature to this bait is the silent weight transfer system. Spro used a soft tungsten weight system to allow for giant casts in even the windiest of conditions.
You won’t notice this feature just by looking at the bait, but you will certainly notice it when you go for a giant cast on your next trip. It works, it works, and it works!
All in all, this is a bait that I cannot live without, and you shouldn’t either.
