ICAST 2012 Live Post: Strike King Rage Tail

Strike King’s Rage Tail imprint has some very exciting things happening at ICAST 2012.

They have so many, it was tough to get the down low on each of them, but we did get a few specifics worked out.

All in all, the Rage Tail baits look very exciting. The split-tail offerings have tails that kick up an amazing fuss. If you are looking for massive amounts of water disturbance, this is a good place to start. [Read more…]

ICAST 2012 Live Post: River2Sea

River2Sea has a lot to be proud of, as usual, but this year at ICAST, there is something that they have done that stands out.

I mentioned earlier that umbrella rigs (aka Alabama rigs) are all over the floor this year. Ever since Paul Elias won a FLW event with one, they seem to be all the rage.

Everything that is being brought to the table seems to be just variations or slight tweeks on the classic design—except for River2Sea. They have some changes that have really made a difference to the concept of the lure. [Read more…]

ICAST 2012 Live Post: Freedom Tackle

ICAST 2012 is in full effect, and we are all over the floor looking for the unique, unusual, and effective.

There are several trends going on that are easy to spot. For example, everyone and their mother is coming out with an umbrella style rig. These things are all over the place.

This is fine and dandy, but we want to bring light to products that aren’t going to get as much press—but absolutely should.

One such product is by a company called Freedom Tackle[Read more…]

ICAST 2012 Preview: Reels

Tomorrow, the ICAST 2012 show will officially kick off in Orlando, Florida.

We will be covering all the action of the show live from the floor, but until that coverage begins tomorrow morning, we will give you some previews of what to expect.

First, let’s start by looking at reels.

Understand first, that we will not see a great deal of new technologies or massive upgrades in the reel department. What we will see is existing designs being upgraded and re-worked, largely making the effort to reduce the weight of the reels.

Let’s run down a few of the larger manufactures and what we know for sure we will see from them. [Read more…]

Spinnerbait Tactics For Transitional Bass

Summer time bass fishing is a bit of a roller coaster. Sometimes, you are putting more bass in the boat than you know what to do with, and other times you can’t catch a thing and you’re baking in the sun on top of it all.

This holds especially true for those of us with really unpredictable summer weather patters.

For instance, on my home lake, Lake Lanier, we have recently had record breaking temperatures of over 100 degrees, followed by moderate to high winds and thunderstorms.

Locating and catching bass can be frustrating, but this spinnerbait technique will help you do just that. [Read more…]

JVD Wins His First Elite Series Event In Wisconsin

Kevin VanDam isn’t the only angler in town

Green Bay, Wisconsin– Jonathon VanDam may not be the most famous person in his family, but he’s off to a good start. JVD boated a four day total bag of 79 pounds, 2 ounces of smallmouth bass to win the Bassmaster Elite Green Bay Challenge on Lake Michigan.

He edged the more seasoned Brandon Palaniuk by a mere 4 ounces.

Like they say in racing, it doesn’t matter if you win by an inch or a mile.

On top of the standard $100,000 pay day, JVD also claims his first Classic entry—an event his uncle has dominated for over a decade with four wins since 2001. [Read more…]

Five Monster Fish Worth The Trip

We’ve probably all seen pictures of giant, trophy pike and musky.

Maybe you’ve gone after tarpon on the fly looking for that one-of-a-kind big fish thrill.

While those should definitely be on every angler’s bucket list, today I want to introduce you to a few species of fish you might not have heard of before.

Most of these monsters require a passport and more than a few planes to get to them, but hooking into one could be well worth it. [Read more…]

Bassmaster Elite Mississippi River Rumble Results

La Crosse, Wisconsin– The Bassmaster Elite series wrapped another tournament today on the Mississippi River—and the man of the hour was Todd Faircloth.

The entire tournament was a thriller, with margins of only ounces separating competitors on the leader board. When it was all said and done, Faircloth took the win by just over a pound as he finished with a tournament total of 62 pounds, 4 ounces. His closest competitor, and runner up, was Cliff Pace with 61 pounds even (his second, 2nd place finish of the month). [Read more…]

How Do Bass See?

Understanding the biology of the eye of the fish is very often not even talked about, yet is very important to being able to catch a lot of bass.

Bass are often called sight predators—so it only makes sense for us to gain at least an elementary understanding of the way they do this. That’s what we will be looking at in depth today.

Don’t worry, this won’t be a biology class, but it will give you a basic understanding of the biology of the eye of the fish, so that you can more effectively catch them. [Read more…]
