Fly Fishing For Beginners: How To Roll Cast

In this edition of fly fishing for beginners, we are going to look at yet another facet of casting—the roll cast.

The fly fishing roll cast is an incredibly useful tool, especially on wild water where the trees and shrubs grow right up to the water’s edge. Imagine if you were in a river like that, with trees right behind you, and you were to attempt a basic fly cast. What do you think would happen?

Of course your fly would end up catching a “tree fish,” you would probably end up cursing a lot, and in the end, you would have to replace your fly. All in, that’s bad news. [Read more…]

The great outdoors are just that, great! I think all of us who are of able mind and body have somewhat of a responsibility to get out there and live life to it’s fullest. For us here at MVF, that means getting out and seeing some incredible parts of the world. [Read more…]

[ReviewAZON asin=”B001FOMOFE” display=”inlinepost”] If you’ve read this blog for any length of time, you already know I am a fan of Lefty Kreh and Bob Clouser.

Get Your Feet Wet With The Simms Pursuit Sandals, A Perfect Solution For Wet Wading

One of the best parts about summer for the fly fisherman is the ability to fish without having to gear all the way up. You don’t need to throw on your waders or layer up the clothes like you do in the winter time.

Fly Fishing For Beginners: Fly Casting Pt. I

Well, it is time in our fly fishing for beginners series to have a look at fly casting. While certainly different from casting standard tackle with a spinning or baitcasting reel, fly casting is not the mystical or magical thing it’s meant to be.

Really it comes down to very simple physics. The rod loads with line, and the line is shot at the target.  [Read more…]

5 Things To Protect Yourself From Sun Damage This Summer

Sun damage is a real threat

It is now July, and that means the summer is mid way through. It also means the hottest and nastiest days are still ahead of us.

If you have managed to get through this much of your summer without a sun burn, congratulations to you. I for one, have not. I’ve actually been burned twice this year (you would think once was enough, but apparently, not for me!). [Read more…]

I’ve Never Met An Idiot On The River Book Review

[ReviewAZON asin=”B0056IJKCA” display=”inlinepost”]

Most people know Henry Winkler as the lovable character from Happy Days Arthur Fonzarelli. Or perhaps you know him from his recent gigs as a director.

Whatever the case may be, you may not know that Mr. Winkler is an avid fly fisherman. I’ve decided to review this book after reading a similar review in a well known fly fishing publication, which shall remain nameless. I felt their assessment of the book was a little unfair and heavy handed. [Read more…]

Spro Little John DD Crankbait

The Spro Little John crankbait is not a new bait, but since I have been having some tremendous success with it lately, I thought it worth a review.

The Little John is different from the Fat John in the depth that it dives. This bait is designed to dive in the 15-20 foot range, while the Fat John is a shallow runner. Having the Little John in your tackle box alongside the Fat John makes for a dynamite pairing that will put fish in the boat all day. [Read more…]

Today, in our third look at fly fishing tackle, we are going to talk about flies.

Whether you buy your flies, or decide to take the plunge and begin to learn about fly tying, the principles are largely the same—try to get as close to what the fish are naturally feeding upon as possible.

There are thousands of fly patterns to choose from, and they vary widely based on the type of fish you are targeting, the style of fishing you are doing, and the natural food available in a particular area.  [Read more…]

Fly Fishing For Beginners: Understanding Fly Fishing Tackle Pt. II

I remember the first trip I ever made to a fly shop to get my first rig. It was a pretty straight forward process when it came to choosing a rod, reel, waders, and boots.

Then he started asking me about lines, and that’s when I got lost!

I’ve since learned fly line isn’t really as complicated as I thought at the time. Let’s break it down and make things simple so you don’t get the shock that I did my first time to the fly shop. [Read more…]
