ICAST 2012: Terminator

Terminator is entering the fray with their own Umbrella rig which will feature titanium wires as opposed to steel and comes in models ranging from 5 inch arms to 10 in arms to address the various sizes of swimbaits now being offered specifically for the A rig.

Of course Terminator will continue to produce spinnerbaits but this year adds a 3/4 ounce version to their line-up for those deeper presentations.

In terms of jigs, they will introduce a 1/4 ounce version finesse jig for when the situation calls for a smaller profile.

The rest of the line-up will continue virtually unchanged but these new additions were designed to address specific situations that before now, the company didn’t really have product to match.

ICAST 2012: Shimano

Shimano offers so many quality products, it can become easy to get lost in all of them. We took a look at all of the new offerings at the booth, and were pleasantly surprised that they were able to continue to make improvements this year.

For the new season we start with the new Saros FA Spinning reel. They introduced a new graphite called XGT7. The claim is that it is amost 200% stronger than current versions. It features a two bearing supported pinion gear, a new rapid fire drag that takes less turns to increase or decrease the pressure. It will come in four sizes, 1000 through 4000 series.  [Read more…]

ICAST 2012: Wright & McGill

Wright & McGill are adding to their line-up with a new Rick Clunn Cranking Reel. The colors are designed to match the rods that Rick designed for them and it features a 6.3:1 gear ratio.

Yes, it isn’t what you would usually think of these days as the ideal speed for cranking, but Rick Clunn explains that he tends to fish these plugs faster than the average guy and he can always slow down if he needs to.

The rods will continue from last year and, like all Wright & McGill products that Rick endorses, are value priced.   [Read more…]

ICAST 2012 Preview: Rods

The next category in our ICAST 2012 preview series of post is all about rods.

While the vast majority of new reels this year are experiencing face lifts and slight tweeks and improvements, rods are a whole different ballgame.

The vast majority of new research and engineering is going into rods.

We won’t hit everyone with something new in this preview (check back for the live updates tomorrow for that), but we want to give you a few things to look forward to. [Read more…]

Paycheck Baits Punch Skirt

With summer in full swing, most of us will find ourselves fishing vegetation of one form or another. We want to get to those fish that are hiding out beneath the matted vegetation and wandering in between stalks of various grasses.

If you’re like us, you don’t hesitate to throw your bait right in there and often find yourself cleaning your bait when you get back to you because it has been fouled with gunk. There is a solution that is simple and works very effectively.

The Paycheck Baits Punch Skirt. [Read more…]

Night Fishing Baits For Big Bass

We’ve discussed some of the factors in night fishing up to this point. Now let’s get down to where the rubber meets the road and get specific in terms of strategies and lure selection so that the uninitiated can jump in with both feet and start catching some fish!

I always make it a point to get to the water at least an hour before sunset. The time will differ depending on how large the body is as well as how familiar I am with it. If I’ve been there several times and have a good lay of the land, or lake in this case, I don’t need as much time to figure out where I’m going to start.

Conversely, if I haven’t fished a given location very often, I will take more time to assess where to start.  [Read more…]

Night Fishing Basics

The Kid did a great job of laying out how bass see after dark. This adaptation to their eyesight, in conjunction with other specialized sensory systems, afford them the ability to hunt very efficiently after the sun goes down. Using a little of that information will help you get started with your night fishing.

We have had several questions from readers who have yet to take the plunge, not literally of course, into night time bass fishing. I have to tell you, from experience, that fishing in the dark can be some of the most fun an angler can have whether they are on the deck of a boat or on the shore of a pond. [Read more…]

River2Sea Bling Spinnerbait

I know that summer is coming at us like a freight train and we’ll be taking a look at a lot of baits that are designed specifically for targeting off shore structure but today, we want to look at another new bait from River2Sea called the Bling Spinnerbait. This is another Ish Monroe designed lure.

If you’ve been with us for a while, you’ll recall that the Crystal Spin from River2Sea has been our favorite spinnerbait for several seasons. When the announcement came that they were producing a different spinner, we had to get our hands on it and see what it could do as well as what the differences are.

We chose the Bling in 3/8  ounce with  double willow blades as this configuration has been the most successful for us over the years no matter where we have fished. So let’s get the Bling out of the package and see what we can see.   [Read more…]

Paycheck Baits Head Case

Have you ever wished for a simple piece of terminal tackle to fill a specific need that does one thing and one thing only but does it very well? I know that we have. In particular, I’ve always wanted something that protects my knot, allows soft plastic jerkbaits along with other weightless plastics to slide through weeds easier without getting a bunch balled up on the front of the bait and, just for hoots and giggles, extends the life of those baits a little longer while avoiding any negative affect on the action of the bait.

Yeah, I know I said one thing, but I meant to say, one item that accomplishes all these things. Is there any such product?   [Read more…]

Paycheck Baits Repo Man

The topwater bite is starting to pick up around here especially in low light conditions. One of our favorite ways to catch bass is with walk-the-dog type lures. If you look back in the archives you will find a review that we did on the Reaction Innovations Barely Legal Vixen.

I don’t know the whole story as far as why that bait seemed to disappear but the Paycheck Baits Repo Man is the re-incarnation of that plug in its larger version. [Read more…]
