Summer Bass Fishing Tips

It Gets Tough In The Summer

Some of our readers have written in telling us about how incredibly hot it has gotten in their area lately and this has shut down the bass. One gentlemen in particular has asked if there is anything that he can do differently to wake em’ up.

I gotta tell you that we have the same problem here in So-Cal. It’s as though we skipped spring and went from cold, wet days immediately into very hot, clear days. When this happens there are a few things that I have found that generally speaking, will put some fish on your thumb. [Read more…]

From Bass Fishing To Fly Fishing

Time For Some Fly Action

Just a quick little blast to let everyone in on my second official fly fishing excursion. We went to Georgia for vacation and of course to do some fishing which included fly-fishing on a couple of “The Kids” favorite river systems.

I wrote about my first experience with this type of fishing when I went to Georgia last November. Ever since then, I have been waiting for another opportunity to try it again if for no other reason, to get out in the woods, off the beaten path and pursue some wild trout. [Read more…]

Basstrix Fat Minnow

Today we’re going to look at the Basstrix Fat Minnow. This lure is 4 inches in length with a hollow body and split tail design. Some folks may not recall, but Basstrix was responsible for the whole hollow-body, paddle-tail swimbait craze. In fact, I still know a few folks who simply will not try any other bait in this class.

I remember when they were first introduced and it seems as though they were virtually impossible to get. Outlets would sell out seemingly the same day they got them in. Man was that frustrating! [Read more…]

Aaron Martin’s Scrounger Head

The Scrounger

Today, let’s look at another piece of terminal tackle that has become the “flavor of the month”, so to speak. The Davis Baits Aaron Martens Fish Swim Jig or scrounger head as it’s known. These jig heads are molded to accept a collar that is made of a flexible clear plastic that when retrieved will impart a subtle side to side motion on fluke style baits. [Read more…]

Pond Scum Of The Month, June 2011

It’s that time of the month here at MVF to award the prestigious “Pond Scum of the Month”. This month the award goes to “Barleyjuiceicous Overingestameoba”, or BO for short. Bo can be found all across this country as his target species of choice is usually catfish.

For any of us who have walked the shore of our favorite fishing hole at night in the warm summer months, we have run across BO. This particular species of pond scum makes his presence known and makes no attempt to conceal himself. [Read more…]

Davis Bait X Swim Screw Lock Swimbait Hooks

Today we’re going to take another swim-bait hook out on the water and see how it performs. As usual, we have our favorite in this category but we do, in the interest of fair play, like to take a look at other competitive offerings. We picked up some Davis Bait X Swim Screw Lock Swimbait Hook.

These hooks are available in hook sizes from 4/0 to 8/0 and in weights from 1/16 to 3/8 which is a wide range of choices. Unfortunately, they don’t have anything smaller than a 4/0 which is a bit limiting for finesse style bait. But let’s see how they perform on the water. [Read more…]

Reaction Innovations Little Dipper Swimbait

The Little Dipper Package

Let’s look at another offering in the swimbait category. When the situation calls for something on the smallish side, what are you going to use? We decided to give the Reaction Innovations Little Dipper a go. We fished the Little Dipper as a swimbait with a weighted hook on Lake Lanier so let’s take a look at the action that you can expect from this pint-sized lure. [Read more…]

River2Sea V Joint Wake

V joint side shot

We have reviewed a few offerings from River2Sea and we have one more that really caught our interest, the V-Joint Wake. There are often times when you need a bait for fishing skinny water as bass are pushing shad into the shallows to feed on them. [Read more…]

River2Sea S Waver

S-Waver

Tonight let’s take a look at a hard bodied swimbait from River2Sea that we picked up recently – the S-Waver. We obtained the 168S in Rainbow trout. This bait is 6 ¾ inches in length and weighs in at 15/8 oz. The S-Waver comes stock with Daichi hooks that are sharp out of the package and ready to fish. [Read more…]

How To Tie A Bass Fishing Double Rig

We mentioned in our review of the Poor Boys Erie Darter that, in my opinion, the best way to rig this bait is with a double rig. We have had some folks write to us about that and ask us how exactly to tie this rig. We think this is a great question, and a great topic to touch on today. [Read more…]
