Don’t quit fishin’ just because it’s a little cold outside!

With the holidays coming to a close, we just wanted to wish all y’all a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Hopefully you got everything that you wished for and then some including all those new lures, rods, reels and terminal tackle items that you were looking for. With that in mind, we have one question for you. Why are you going to wait for warm weather to arrive before you get back out on the water and put it to good use? [Read more…]

B.A.S.S. Announces National Team Championship

Bassmaster-Team-ChampionshipsBirmingham, Ala.- Well, looks like fishing buddies everywhere can rejoice. Yesterday, B.A.S.S. announced the launch of the National Team Championship.

Not only will teams duke it out for the title, but on shining star will punch a pretty big ticket.

“Not only will we crown the national championship team, but we will also provide an opportunity for one outstanding grass-roots fisherman to qualify for the 2015 Bassmaster Classic,” B.A.S.S. CEO Bruce Akin said in a press release.

The Format

The championship will be held in late fall of 2014, with the exact date and locale to be named later.

To qualify, teams will have finish on the top of a qualifying tournament trail.

After qualifying, pairs of anglers will go at it for the team title. Following the team portion of the event, the anglers will be split up, and compete for one coveted spot in the 2015 Classic.

This is sure to be a great addition to the tournament line up, and a great way to get teams across the country some exposure and opportunity to show their stuff on a bit stage.

As a fun bonus, one of the supporting sponsors are our friends at Livingston Lures.

So, if you think your team has what it takes, sign up for a qualifier and get out on the water. You never know, we might be seeing your name on a pretty important leader board in 2015.

See ya on the water…

The Positive Fishing Philosophy

With the new season here and another Classic in the books, a lot of anglers are itching to hit the water as they tend not to fish as much during the colder months.

That is up to the individual in terms of when they feel most comfortable fishing but if you’re one of those folks who don’t do a lot of chunking and winding when it’s cold, you should consider making it a goal to do more fishing late this year as you may find that with the decrease in pressure on your local lake, you could have some great days.

But this is just an aside as the real purpose of this article is to give you something to think about once you do decide to get out there and pursue your favorite species of fish.

I’m intentionally vague as it really doesn’t matter what particular finny critter floats your boat when it comes to applying what we’re going to discuss today.  [Read more…]

How To Catch More Fish, In Less Time, With Less Effort Today

Two things to get us started.

First, this is a long post, 1,022 words to be exact, but it will be worth it.

Second, I absolutely realize that the headline makes it sound like some crazy, infomercial snake oil designed to help you part with some of your hard earned cash—but it isn’t.

I am not talking about some magical bait or attractant, or some crazy new technique making the rounds on the professional tournaments. I am talking about a simple, time tested principle.

Pareto’s Principle, to be exact. [Read more…]

Why Premium Tackle Makes More Sense Than Dollars

How much is the average cost of lures in your box? Meaning, if you added them all up, and divided by the number of baits, what is that number?

Most people probably don’t know (and I’m pretty sure I don’t!), but an educated guess after looking at one of my more average boxes is around $7.00. The industry has changed dramatically over the last 20 years, and while there are certainly companies just looking to boost profit margins, there are good reasons for spending a bit more.

First though, let’s jump in the time machine… [Read more…]

Boyd Duckett Takes Home Championship And Classic Berth In New York

Syracuse, New York– Boyd Duckett has a lot to be thankful for these days. The Demopolis, Alabama pro has a two week old son at home, a nice looking trophy and $100,000 from the Ramada Championship on Oneida, and now knows what he will be doing in February next year—fishing the Classic.

Before the tournament, Duckett was in 53rd place in the point standing, so a win was just about the only thing that would keep him from missing a second consecutive Classic. [Read more…]

Summer Is Almost Over, Take Someone Fishing

Now that ICAST is over and the dust has settled a bit, it’s time for us to get back to doing what we enjoy the most, getting these products on the water to see if they live up to their billing! But before we dive headlong into that, we want to take a minute to encourage all of our readers to make it a point this year to take someone fishing that has either never gone or hasn’t been in years.

I know several people that meet these requirements and have recently gotten one of them on the water, obtained a firm commitment from another as well as getting a promise to tag along from a couple more. The reason I tell you this is that, in each case, I had to appeal to the individual in different ways.  [Read more…]

Duluth GA— Just past the age where he can legally celebrate with an adult beverage, Jacob Wheeler has brought home the richest prize in tournament bass fishing.

ICAST 2012 Live Post: Hook Setting Tips With Bill Siemantel

Amidst all of the crazy hustle and bustle of the ICAST 2012 show, Pops and I had the chance to sit back and talk fishing for a while with famed big bass hunter Bill Siemantel at the Spro booth.

Opportunities like this don’t come at you every day, so we made sure to take advantage.

The thing about talking to a guy like Bill is you are going to get a serious amount of information coming at you fast and furious—and this isn’t theory…

Bill has honed his craft like few others, catching lunker size bass over 10 pounds on a regular basis. It is not an exaggeration to say that Bill has forgotten more about bass fishing than I will probably ever know. He gave us a lot of outstanding information, but one tip really stood out.

When we started talking about setting the hook, he offered us a couple of simple changes you can make to your technique to make sure you are landing more bass. [Read more…]
