ICAST 2012 Live Post: Strike King Rage Tail

Strike King’s Rage Tail imprint has some very exciting things happening at ICAST 2012.

They have so many, it was tough to get the down low on each of them, but we did get a few specifics worked out.

All in all, the Rage Tail baits look very exciting. The split-tail offerings have tails that kick up an amazing fuss. If you are looking for massive amounts of water disturbance, this is a good place to start. [Read more…]

ICAST 2012 Live Post: River2Sea

River2Sea has a lot to be proud of, as usual, but this year at ICAST, there is something that they have done that stands out.

I mentioned earlier that umbrella rigs (aka Alabama rigs) are all over the floor this year. Ever since Paul Elias won a FLW event with one, they seem to be all the rage.

Everything that is being brought to the table seems to be just variations or slight tweeks on the classic design—except for River2Sea. They have some changes that have really made a difference to the concept of the lure. [Read more…]

ICAST 2012 Live Post: Freedom Tackle

ICAST 2012 is in full effect, and we are all over the floor looking for the unique, unusual, and effective.

There are several trends going on that are easy to spot. For example, everyone and their mother is coming out with an umbrella style rig. These things are all over the place.

This is fine and dandy, but we want to bring light to products that aren’t going to get as much press—but absolutely should.

One such product is by a company called Freedom Tackle[Read more…]

ICAST 2012 Preview: Rods

The next category in our ICAST 2012 preview series of post is all about rods.

While the vast majority of new reels this year are experiencing face lifts and slight tweeks and improvements, rods are a whole different ballgame.

The vast majority of new research and engineering is going into rods.

We won’t hit everyone with something new in this preview (check back for the live updates tomorrow for that), but we want to give you a few things to look forward to. [Read more…]

ICAST 2012 Preview: Reels

Tomorrow, the ICAST 2012 show will officially kick off in Orlando, Florida.

We will be covering all the action of the show live from the floor, but until that coverage begins tomorrow morning, we will give you some previews of what to expect.

First, let’s start by looking at reels.

Understand first, that we will not see a great deal of new technologies or massive upgrades in the reel department. What we will see is existing designs being upgraded and re-worked, largely making the effort to reduce the weight of the reels.

Let’s run down a few of the larger manufactures and what we know for sure we will see from them. [Read more…]

Paycheck Baits Punch Skirt

With summer in full swing, most of us will find ourselves fishing vegetation of one form or another. We want to get to those fish that are hiding out beneath the matted vegetation and wandering in between stalks of various grasses.

If you’re like us, you don’t hesitate to throw your bait right in there and often find yourself cleaning your bait when you get back to you because it has been fouled with gunk. There is a solution that is simple and works very effectively.

The Paycheck Baits Punch Skirt. [Read more…]

River2Sea Bling Spinnerbait

I know that summer is coming at us like a freight train and we’ll be taking a look at a lot of baits that are designed specifically for targeting off shore structure but today, we want to look at another new bait from River2Sea called the Bling Spinnerbait. This is another Ish Monroe designed lure.

If you’ve been with us for a while, you’ll recall that the Crystal Spin from River2Sea has been our favorite spinnerbait for several seasons. When the announcement came that they were producing a different spinner, we had to get our hands on it and see what it could do as well as what the differences are.

We chose the Bling in 3/8  ounce with  double willow blades as this configuration has been the most successful for us over the years no matter where we have fished. So let’s get the Bling out of the package and see what we can see.   [Read more…]

River2Sea Ish Monroe Biggie Poppa Crankbait

Fishing square billed crankbaits can be productive most of the year due to the fact that there will almost always be some fish in any given system that stay shallow. A new offering from River2Sea is the Ish Monroe designed Biggie Series.

There are currently four different versions of this bait available which are the Biggie-Smalls in Stealth Runner (a slow floater) and Bumpin’ Rattle (a fast floater) as well as the Biggie-Poppa in the same configurations. For our review today, we obtained the Biggie-Poppa, Stealth Runner, which is 2 5/8 inches in length, weighs 5/8 of an ounce, comes equipped with size 2 trebles fore and aft and is their silent version.   [Read more…]

Paycheck Baits Head Case

Have you ever wished for a simple piece of terminal tackle to fill a specific need that does one thing and one thing only but does it very well? I know that we have. In particular, I’ve always wanted something that protects my knot, allows soft plastic jerkbaits along with other weightless plastics to slide through weeds easier without getting a bunch balled up on the front of the bait and, just for hoots and giggles, extends the life of those baits a little longer while avoiding any negative affect on the action of the bait.

Yeah, I know I said one thing, but I meant to say, one item that accomplishes all these things. Is there any such product?   [Read more…]
