One component of fishing that can make a huge difference in everything from angler fatigue to hook up ratio, having the ability to present a bait properly, casting distance and accuracy as well as myriad other concerns is a good, balanced rod. Yes, the stick you’re using can, depending on which one you’re throwing, either… [Continue Reading]

Daiwa Kage Rod Review

Daiwa introduced their Tatula series of reels several years ago beginning with the original Tatula 100 and 100 Type R. We’ve had every major version update since then including the CT Type R and the SV. We obtained the new Tatula 100 some time last year and have been fishing with it ever since.

There are times when big topwater walking baits are key to getting bites while other situations may call for something a little less boisterous. One bait that you can use that still has a decent length to it but presents itself with more subtlety is the Berkley Drift Walker. This bait comes in ten colors… [Continue Reading]

Fishing the Missile Baits Missile Craw

Craw imitations are a great bait from early spring to late fall traditionally but can be a useful tool all year long. Today’s review is an in-depth look at the Missile Baits Missile Craw. No, this isn’t a brand new bait but it is one that we hadn’t fished until this season. [Read more…]

Fishing the New Koppers’ Live Target Baitball Squarebill

We did a lot of shallow water fishin’ in the spring to test several new squarebills. One of those is the subject of today’s review, the Koppers Live Target Baitball Series. If you hadn’t heard, or read our article on the award winners at ICAST 2013, this lure won in the category of, “Best new hard bait”. [Read more…]

On the water with the Rapala DT-6

Today let’s take a look at the Rapala DT-6. Specifically, a DT-6 in one of the Ike’s Ink Patterns. You have probably heard that this is one of the main baits that Randy Howell used to win the 2014 Bassmaster Classic.

The version that he was using was Ike’s Demon. For our testing we used Ike’s Penguin. You’ll notice in the photos that the underbelly has an orange tint to it. We use this because there are so many pumpkinseed in our local waters that it makes sense to have a little bit of that color in our baits to, “match the hatch”. [Read more…]

Jackall TN60 Review

Spring time is always a blast when it comes to fishing. It’s one of our favorite times of the year. One of the genre’s of baits that we really look forward to testing in that transitional time frame as the water begins to warm are lipless crankbaits.

While the Jackall TN60 is not brand new, it’s one that we haven’t had the chance to fish until this season. But we gotta tell you, its been a blast testing this little bait. [Read more…]

Missile Baits Warlock Head

For spring time, clear water situations, few techniques are as much fun and productive as using a shakey head. Missile Baits is a company that John Crews, elite series angler, is heavily involved in. Up to this point, they have been concentrating on a limited number of soft plastic baits all designed and thoroughly tested prior to being released to the public. [Read more…]

Final observations: Bassmaster Classic

We wanted to do one more article to cover a few more of the offerings that debuted at the Classic as we feel that these products may strike a cord with y’all as they did with us.

At the Jackall booth we had a chance to see their first entry into the U.S. rod market which is in reality, [Read more…]

The New Shimano Curado I

One of the coolest things about going to the Classic is seeing the new products that are debuted there. Of course you’ve heard of the Shimano Curado if you’ve been around bass fishing for any time at all.

I remember when the first incarnation of this reel came out under the moniker, “Bantam Curado”. While this reel didn’t set the bass fishing world on fire, it did provide a solid base for what was to come. [Read more…]

Christie Slides By The Pack With 4 Ounces To Spare

141805062915_gt412Russelville, Arkansas— It doesn’t matter if you win by 10 pounds, or 10 ounces, a win is a win.

Jason Christie put together a come from behind charge to win this weekend’s Bassmaster Elite event on Lake Dardanelle to win by the narrowest of margins. Four ounces of bass, and no doubt buckets of sweat, was all he needed to punch that ticket to the next year’s big dance. [Read more…]

Rookie Powroznik Charges Back to Win at Toledo Bend

Jacob Powroznik wins at Toledo BendMany, La – Welcome to the show, Mr. Powroznik.

You likely haven’t heard that name before, but it’s time to remember the name Jacob Powroznik. The Elite Series rookie made a late charge to best the field of pros at Toledo Bend.

To say it was smooth sailing though, would be a lie.

Sitting atop the leader board after Friday’s fishing, Powroznik couldn’t figure them out on Saturday. Add in the fact that someone decided it was a good time to perform a controlled burn that smoked him out of a great spot, and you have all the makings of a dramatic come back.

At Saturday’s end, Powroznik was looking up at Dean Rojas, and a 2 and 1/2 pound deficit.

Sunday’s word of the day was focus. Powroznik had it, and put it to work on bass taking residence on spawning beds. The reward was a 19 pound, 11 ounce bag—giving him a total of 79 pounds, 12 ounces of Toledo Bend bass.

With the win, Powroznik punches his ticket to the 2015 Bassmaster Classic.

Mark Davis Takes Another Top 5

Call him Mr. Reliable.

Arkansas pro Mark Davis grabbed fourth place, which gives him his fourth consecutive top 5 finish.

This type of consistency has Davis atop the Toyota Angler of the Year points race. These type of performances will certainly have people starting to watch eagerly.

Casey Ashley Continues to Impress

After surprising nearly everyone at the 2014 Classic, college angler Casey Ashley locked up fifth place.

Turns out the Auburn student was not just riding a little luck streak earlier this year on Guntersville—he’s proving to the world what those of us who follow the College Series already knew.

This kid can fish.

He will undoubtedly be a staple for years to come, and as he continues to improve, look for this young man to be a future champion (yes, you can quote me on that!)

The 2014 Bassmaster Classic Expo Wrap

The 2014 Bassmaster Classic is now in the books. We can’t talk about it without saying congratulations to Randy Howell for turning in an amazing if not an inspired performance. However, in attending the Classic, there are so many other components that don’t get air time or much media coverage that we think deserve some attention. [Read more…]
