One component of fishing that can make a huge difference in everything from angler fatigue to hook up ratio, having the ability to present a bait properly, casting distance and accuracy as well as myriad other concerns is a good, balanced rod. Yes, the stick you’re using can, depending on which one you’re throwing, either… [Continue Reading]

Daiwa Kage Rod Review

Daiwa introduced their Tatula series of reels several years ago beginning with the original Tatula 100 and 100 Type R. We’ve had every major version update since then including the CT Type R and the SV. We obtained the new Tatula 100 some time last year and have been fishing with it ever since.

There are times when big topwater walking baits are key to getting bites while other situations may call for something a little less boisterous. One bait that you can use that still has a decent length to it but presents itself with more subtlety is the Berkley Drift Walker. This bait comes in ten colors… [Continue Reading]

Team Davies Ventana Drop Shot Sinker

Every once in a while, something comes along that is so much more than just a little tweak to an old established fishing tool that it really gets us excited to write about.

The reason is simple. It makes a time tested technique more effective by a huge leap as opposed to an incremental move forward. One of those kind of products is the subject of our review today. [Read more…]

Trigger X Slop Hopper Review

Today we’re going to take an in-depth look at a product that got our attention last year. The Trigger X Slop Hopper.

For those of you who have been with us for a while, you know that one of our favorite class of baits is the soft plastic swimbait. These little beauties have produced so many fish for us over the last several years in so many situations that their effectiveness is unquestionable. [Read more…]

Terminator T1 Colorado Willow Spinnerbait

One of our favorite baits for pre-spawn action has always been spinnerbaits. We’ve tried a lot of them although we have missed a few in the process. Today’s review is on one such bait. The Terminator T1 Colorado Willow Spinnerbait.

Generally speaking, we prefer a double willow configuration for this time of year but after obtaining a couple of these, we had to get them on the water and see how they perform. [Read more…]

Sufix Invisiline Castable 100% Fluorocarbon

These days it seems as though more and more people are using fluorocarbon lines. From the pros to novices, there are advantages that lend themselves to certain conditions that you may find are present at your favorite fishing hole.

While we typically default to hybrid line for our everyday use, we decided to give Sufix Invisiline 100% Fluorocarbon a try for some of our favorite finesse techniques and see if we found a noticeable difference

Fluorocarbon lines have in the past been notoriously expensive compared to their mono counterparts. While there is a case to be made in terms of justifying that expense, some of it was, in our opinion, just plain cock and bull.

Why would you pay the extra money for a fluoro? Because of the advantages that it is supposed to have over monos. [Read more…]

Livingston Lures Pro Ripper Review

Today’s review is about another new kid on the block from the folks at Livingston Lures.

The Pro Ripper is their lipless crankbait.

If you’re unfamiliar with Livingston Lures, they make a series of hard baits which use micro-electronics to emit a “croaking” sound as the lure is retrieved. Some models also add an LED light to the package. [Read more…]

The Positive Fishing Philosophy

With the new season here and another Classic in the books, a lot of anglers are itching to hit the water as they tend not to fish as much during the colder months.

That is up to the individual in terms of when they feel most comfortable fishing but if you’re one of those folks who don’t do a lot of chunking and winding when it’s cold, you should consider making it a goal to do more fishing late this year as you may find that with the decrease in pressure on your local lake, you could have some great days.

But this is just an aside as the real purpose of this article is to give you something to think about once you do decide to get out there and pursue your favorite species of fish.

I’m intentionally vague as it really doesn’t matter what particular finny critter floats your boat when it comes to applying what we’re going to discuss today.  [Read more…]

16 Lures That Cost An Arm And A Leg

The Kid and I were going back and forth over the price of lures the other day. Like everything else, the price of bass tackle has risen over the last couple of decades. I can remember when $5 was considered a high price for a plug!

Of course these days that would be considered pretty cheap considering the range that the angler can spend on lures. So we decided to put together a short list to show just how much could be spent if one were so inclined.

Before we start the list, we just want to get a couple of caveats out of the way so that nobody confuses what this is about. [Read more…]

Lucky Bug Lures

Anything that can add some versatility to your tackle box is a win in my book, and that’s exactly what you get with the Lucky Bug.

Picture three different techniques, three different styles of fishing, and one bait that can do them all—that my friends, is the very definition of versatility.

Now take that very bait, and add to it the fact that it won’t cost you an arm, leg, or any other appendage, and now we are talking about something pretty special.

Let’s take a closer look at the Lucky Bug. [Read more…]

Before we get into the details of these new sticks, most of you will know the name Kistler from their now infamous Z-Bone series of custom built rods. Yes, these are a custom-built rod that carries with it a custom price.
