One component of fishing that can make a huge difference in everything from angler fatigue to hook up ratio, having the ability to present a bait properly, casting distance and accuracy as well as myriad other concerns is a good, balanced rod. Yes, the stick you’re using can, depending on which one you’re throwing, either… [Continue Reading]

Daiwa Kage Rod Review

Daiwa introduced their Tatula series of reels several years ago beginning with the original Tatula 100 and 100 Type R. We’ve had every major version update since then including the CT Type R and the SV. We obtained the new Tatula 100 some time last year and have been fishing with it ever since.

There are times when big topwater walking baits are key to getting bites while other situations may call for something a little less boisterous. One bait that you can use that still has a decent length to it but presents itself with more subtlety is the Berkley Drift Walker. This bait comes in ten colors… [Continue Reading]

Jeremy Starks Takes The Slow And Steady Approach To A Win On Douglas Lake

Fishing deep pays off with a big win for Starks’ Second Elite Series Title

He just kept plugging along…

That is an apt description for the approach that led Starks’ to his second title, and a $100,000 pay day.

Using a deep crankbait technique sometimes called long-lining, he was able to secure three last-minute bass that would be the key to his title. Ultimately, he would bring 22 pounds, 5 ounces to the podium on the last day—and an overall total of 81 pounds, 2 ounces.

This was good enough to beat Britt Meyers by nearly two pounds. Aaron Martins finished in third after jumping out to an early lead.

Congrats to Starks on his win and for qualifying for the 2013 Classic. Stay tuned for a breakdown of his long-lining technique later this week.

See ya on the water…

G. Loomis NRX Fly Rods

When G. Loomis came out with the GLX series of rods, they were well-received, exceptional pieces of equipment. They set a certain standard for how a rod should perform, and for the quality that should go into them.

Then G. Loomis goes back into the lab and creates the NRX series of fly rods and managed to outdo themselves. [Read more…]

Britt Myers Extends Lead On Douglas Lake

Dandridge, Tenn.– It was another good day for South Carolina native Myers on Douglas Lake. After leap-frogging Aaron Martins on day two of the Elite Series tournament by four pounds, he continued his run and extended his overall lead to just under 6 pounds.

Following a hit and run strategy, Myers fished over 50 different spots on Saturday, not stopping for anything—not even a storm. [Read more…]

Britt Myers Moves Into The Lead On Douglas Lake

Dandridge, Tenn.– After jumping out to a lead on day one, Aaron Martins could not fend of Britt Myers and his 24 pound, 1 ounce bag on day two.

Aaron Martins Takes Two Pound Lead On Day One At Douglas Lake

After only about 30 minutes of fishing, Martins already had a strong 19 pounds of bass in the boat. He started culling early on, and kept improving, before finally weighing in a 23 pound, 14 ounce bag.

He credits breaking a personal rule for his strong early showing—he practiced. [Read more…]

Power Pro Braided Line

My son and I were talking a few days ago about all that we have seen that has come and gone in the fishing world including those products that were brand new a lot of years ago and are now staples in our fishing. One of those that has survived virtually unchanged is Power Pro braided line.

When we originally started using this line it was after having tried several others and being frustrated with the performance of those. I know that this is one of those subjects that tends to be much more subjective than objective for a lot of folks but all we can do is give it to ya’ll straight and see what happens.   [Read more…]

David Dudley Wins FLW Event On Beaver Lake

MVF would like to congratulate David Dudley for winning the FLW tour event on Beaver Lake. He managed to seal the deal by sticking to his plan to target largemouth as opposed to going after spots.

On the final day, he had to make a choice because he hadn’t filled his livewell by noon. The critical decision to stick with the largies was what put him over the top for the tournament.

In case you’re wondering, David caught most of his fish on Sunday using a homemade umbrella rig that employed both swimbaits and willow blades which he followed up with a wacky rig.

In an interview David said,”The Alabama rig works, but it’s just one tool, not a cure-all tool. Fishing is not just about skill. It’s about the mental game, the decisions. Decisions are what separate anglers in this sport.”

Obviously, David Dudley made all the right decisions on Beaver Lake this weekend!

Congrat’s from MVF.
