One component of fishing that can make a huge difference in everything from angler fatigue to hook up ratio, having the ability to present a bait properly, casting distance and accuracy as well as myriad other concerns is a good, balanced rod. Yes, the stick you’re using can, depending on which one you’re throwing, either… [Continue Reading]

Daiwa Kage Rod Review

Daiwa introduced their Tatula series of reels several years ago beginning with the original Tatula 100 and 100 Type R. We’ve had every major version update since then including the CT Type R and the SV. We obtained the new Tatula 100 some time last year and have been fishing with it ever since.

There are times when big topwater walking baits are key to getting bites while other situations may call for something a little less boisterous. One bait that you can use that still has a decent length to it but presents itself with more subtlety is the Berkley Drift Walker. This bait comes in ten colors… [Continue Reading]

Lately, there has been a great deal of interest in a new form of fly fishing called Tenkara. By new of course, I mean it’s actually very old and the fly fishing mainstream is just starting to catch on.

Let’s take a look at this type of fishing, and see if we can’t discover a new facet of this fantastic sport. [Read more…]

Fly Fishing For Beginners: How To Read A River Part III

Today will be our last installment on reading the water. If you haven’t already, be sure to read How To Read A River Part I and Part II.

This article is not so much about teaching, but more about providing additional resources that will be helpful to you. My first two articles laid down the foundation, but reading a trout stream is something you never truly master. [Read more…]

Netbait BK Swim Bait Revisited

I had the itch so bad the other night to go fishing that I went to this small, private facility that is very close to the house to see what the bass were doing and, of course, to test some new lures.

The problem is that this park stocks catfish during the summer and holds derbies that allow the anglers to fish all night. What that translates to is people lighting fires, lining up rods on shore for yards at a time and throwing all manner of stinky things into the water trying to catch kitty cats. [Read more…]

Spro Fat John Shallow Diving Crankbait

Kevin VanDam and I have something in common—we are both bass fishing crankbait monsters!

Ok, ok, maybe I’m not quite the crankbait fisherman KVD is, but it is still one of my favorite ways to go after bass. Recently, I picked up a few Spro Fat John shallow running crankbaits to test out and review. [Read more…]

River2Sea Dahlberg Diver Frog

It may seem like we’ve gone a little frog crazy over here lately, but that’s just because it’s a great time of year to catch some serious bass on frogs. Lily pads, bulrushes, submerged trees and large weed and grass beds are all fantastic places to find big bass during the late spring. [Read more…]

Strike King Tour Grade Spinnerbait Review

Spinnerbaits have so many applications in bass fishing. One of my favorite is to use a spinnerbait to help me locate where the fish are in the water column.

That is exactly what I intended recently when I took the Strike King Tour Grade Spinnerbait out to Lake Lanier for some testing. [Read more…]

Cavitron Buzzbait Review

It’s almost summer around here although we are experiencing another cold front and some unseasonably high rain totals, I had to look at another lure category that is just plain fun to fish, the buzz-bait.

I picked up some Cavitron buzzers and have now had them for over a year and have caught fish on them. So let’s get down to business and take a closer look at them. [Read more…]

Izorline XXX Super Co-Polymer Review

In honor of our new rating system, tonight I am going to take a look at a fishing line that came highly recommended to me which I decided to give a try. I picked up Izorline XXX Super Co-Polymer in two different pound classes. The first was 4 pound which I spooled on a couple of my Pflueger Presidents for this past trout season. The second was 8 pound that landed on a couple of bait-casters which I use all year long, even in the depth of winter, for bass fishing. [Read more…]
