One component of fishing that can make a huge difference in everything from angler fatigue to hook up ratio, having the ability to present a bait properly, casting distance and accuracy as well as myriad other concerns is a good, balanced rod. Yes, the stick you’re using can, depending on which one you’re throwing, either… [Continue Reading]

Daiwa Kage Rod Review

Daiwa introduced their Tatula series of reels several years ago beginning with the original Tatula 100 and 100 Type R. We’ve had every major version update since then including the CT Type R and the SV. We obtained the new Tatula 100 some time last year and have been fishing with it ever since.

There are times when big topwater walking baits are key to getting bites while other situations may call for something a little less boisterous. One bait that you can use that still has a decent length to it but presents itself with more subtlety is the Berkley Drift Walker. This bait comes in ten colors… [Continue Reading]

The Craziest Catch Of All Time

We have all had memorable fishing trips including catching our biggest fish, the most fish we have ever caught, the worst conditions we have ever fished in and so on. These trips are what make the memories and the stories of those trips so vivid and worth repeating to friends and family. I will never forget one trip in particular that is the top of my list as far as flat out weird.  [Read more…]

Bass Fishing Riots?!

You Don't See This Stuff On The Lake!

The last few months have seen a lot of action in professional sports including the NBA championships and the world cup. It seems as though these, along with other sporting events, carry with them warnings and discussions of what may happen in the aftermath of the event. It seems as though there are always reports of reprehensible conduct by so-called fans after their teams win. The Energy E101, Quantum Reels Go To The Next Level

I’ve always had an affinity for Quantum fishing reels. I had to replace two reels this season and stared looking at my options for what I was going to use these reels to cast. After narrowing the field down a bit, I went to Bass Pro Shops and spent two hours looking at all the reels that I had selected and of course talking to the salesman all to decide which reels I was going to purchase. I settled on the Energy in the left hand retrieve and have now had and been using them for the last nine months. [Read more…]

Everyone Needs A Lucky Fishing Hat

One of the things that us bassin folks don’t talk about often but is an essential part of our preparation for any fishing trip is our various superstitions. I have yet to meet an angler that doesn’t use something that they consider good luck that is always consistent no matter the time of year, the target species or whatever other factor may change and these items are usually considered irreplaceable unlike every other tool that we use. For me, the most unchanging part of my equipment over the past fifteen years has been my lucky hat. When I first started fishing I bought a brand new hat and it has been with me on every fishing trip since then. I rarely wore it for any other purpose than to fish, but as all good things must come to an end, it too, after fifteen years, was more than on its last leg, it was definitely five out of six feet under. I have been putting up with the jokes about my hat for at least the last five years and in that time have had to make several “fixes” to that cap to keep it limping along, able to stay on my head, until now.
