Early fall in Georgia can be a funny thing. One day you wake up with dew all over your car and a chill in the air, the next it’s 95 degrees again. Just the same, I figured after my Chattahoochee River trip, it was time to give the Toccoa river a visit.
The Toccoa river is really one of my favorites in Georgia. It’s a very scenic river and has been known to produce some real quality trout. It isn’t a very difficult river to fish in most places, so it’s always an enjoyable trip.
And Finally, A Trout!
I decided to fish the tail waters at Tammen Park first. I got up there early, right around 8:15am. I started the day with a woolly bugger and a Copper John dropper. This combo has been magic for me in the past. On this trip, that wouldn’t be the case. I went through a few more flies, eventually settling on a Y2K bug (junk food, I know), with BWO on the drop.
The persistance paid off with the first rainbow trout of the season for me. He took the dropper, and was only about 7 inches long. I couldn’t have been happier.
Time For Some New Terrain
Tammen Park was getting really warm, so I wanted to head to a different stretch of the Toccoa that has a little more shade from trees and some deeper pools. So I drove over to Curtis Switch.
I went ahead and proceeded with my same fly combo, and three casts in, I had another fish on…
But something was wrong, this was definately not a trout. No sir, lo and behold, it was a carp!
I keyed in on a pretty good pool, made some changes to my flies once again, and decided to go with the flow. It was a good decision. I wasn’t the only angler on the water, I was just the only one catching anything. I’ve told you before how much fun you can have going after these things, and it’s even better when you are the only one doing it.
A Good Day
Hey, it wasn’t exactly an epic day on the Toccoa river, but it was a very good one. I caught a lot of fish (1 rainbow, 5 carp, to be exact) in about 4 1/2 hours of fishing. I can’t wait to get out there again!
See ya on the water…
I’ve told you before how great carp fishing can be, especially when your target species isn’t biting!
