When Pops posted the Bass fisherman’s Christmas wish list, I started thinking, “Why should the bass fisherman have all the fun?”
So I sat down to think about what would the best fly fishing gift ideas be, and the following is the list I came up with. Whether you have a fly fisherman on your Christmas list, or you want to just print this out and hand it to someone so they don’t get you another stupid tie, we are here to help.
There are some great products out there this year, and this is a short list of some of the best.
St. Croix Rio Santo
My Rio Santo is one of the best casting rods I have ever felt. It has a smooth action, and is very responsive.
I’ve written about the St. Croix Rio Santo before, but I like mine so much, it bears mentioning again. With a price point of just under $200, you really can’t go wrong here. If you are stumped about what to get the fly fisherman in your life this year, you just found it. They won’t be disappointed at all.

Simms G4 Pro Waders
Simply put, these are the best waders money can buy, without question.
I had a set of Orvis waders, that were decent, and moderately priced. They did a good job for me for a while. After about 8 months though, I developed a small hole in the right stocking, which caused water to flood my foot. Obviously, this is no fun at all. By the way, that was my third set of Orvis waders in 3 years.
I went back to my local fly shop to see what they suggested. We though about patching it, but since the hole was in the foot, this would not have done a lot of good. I wanted the best waders I could get, so I asked the owner, who is also a world class fly fishing guide, what waders he used.
He didn’t hesitate to say that I needed the Simms G4’s. I bought them, and I have never been happier. Not only are they still hole free after about 15 months, they are also lined with Gore-Tex, which makes them the warmest set of waders I’ve ever owned. In the winter months, this is essential for me. Get a set of these as soon as you can!

Simms Hardbite Star Cleat Studs
While we are on the subject of Simms, you know that we are very much in favor of everyone switching out their old felt sole wading boots for rubber soled boots.
It’s just the better choice for controlling invasive species and protecting our fisheries.
The problem is, without cleats, you will most likely end up on your butt and in the river. That is where these little beauties come in. After 15 minutes and some time with a screwdriver, your boots will be ready for a full day of wading, and landing fish! These are a must have.

See ya on the water…
Great information and solid looking gear. I was hoping to get a new fly rod for my Dad by Christmas, but it will have to wait. I’ll keep the Rio Santo in mind.
I think he would be really happy with the Rio Santo. For less than $200 it blows me away how much I like mine. Have a great holiday Daniel!
