I don’t know about the rest of ya’ll but one of the baits that I really enjoy fishing is a soft plastic swim-bait. We have reviewed the Strike King Shadilicious, which incidentally has been my favorite lure in this category. Today, we are going to look at a new offering in this genre called the Netbait BK Swimbait.
The BK is a split belly bait as opposed to a hollow body and uses an oversized paddle tail for its action. Unlike most other offerings in this category, the Netbait does not have the 3-D eyes. Another part of the appearance is that this lure doesn’t use the fancy patterns that we have come to expect.
Instead, the patterns are more subdued and use colored plastic combined with glitter to imitate the overall appearance of common baitfish. The plastic is very soft and pliable and is easy to rig onto whatever swimbait hook you prefer. My choice here is the Mustad Power Lock Plus which we will be reviewing soon.
Fishing With The Netbait BK
Back to the BK. One of the first things you’ll notice about this lure in the water is that the swimming action is not confined to just the tail. There is definitely some upper body shimmy goin’ on here. I found that this enhanced the overall look of the bait and depending on your retrieve, gives it some unique qualities in the water.
One of those being the way this bait bounces off of structure. I like to use these baits much like a square bill crankbait. I will run them into, around and over any submerged impediments I can find. More often than not, the strike will occur within a few seconds of this contact. The Netbait BK deflects very well because of its relatively solid head.
We chose the 4 inch version for our evaluation but it also comes in a 5 inch. There is no special scent added that I am aware of so I used Fish Sticks Lure Enhancer on it. The truth be known, I would have done that anyway. I gotta tell ya’, when I get a new bait on the water, the first several minutes involve playing with the lure in shallow water so that I can see how it performs with different retrieves. I like to play with the speed, pauses, jerks or whatever strikes me as a way to manipulate the bait and elicit some unusual reaction from it. Only then do I make my first full cast at a more distant target.
I followed my usual MO with the Netbait and was rewarded with a strike on my first full cast. What I did was target some stick-ups about twenty-five yards from me that were more dense at the long end of the cast. I banged the bait against them, let it drop and then began my retrieve through the rest of the stalks trying to bang the BK against every one I could on the way back. If memory serves me, the fourth stalk that I hit was the one that fish came off of and hammered my bait. There was no doubt that this was a bite and the end result was a nice little two pounder on my thumb.
After having used the Netbait BK Swimbait I am sure that it will stay in my tackle box and will see a lot of action as the season progresses. I believe that it has the potential to catch some big fish and it is as versatile as any other lure in this class. One of the advantages the BK has is that it is value priced. At $4.99 it’s a bargain. Another thing I personally like about the Netbait is that after having caught several fish on one lure, that same swimbait is still in pretty good shape. I’m gonna’ use it the next time I go fishing!
