Drop Shot Fishing With The Jackall Crosstail Shad

Yet again, changing tactics pays off. This time, it was all about drop shot fishing.

When I went fishing the other night there were still some fish on the beds. I was watching with one eye as some folks were trying to get those fish to bite with no success. The reason could be that those fish had seen just about every lure known to man dropped onto their nests.

I have no doubt that they probably got stuck a few times in the process but by then had learned to avoid anything that was locked onto the bottom.

Using The Crosstail Shad

Here’s where I’m gonna give you a little known tactic for getting those fish to bite. Use a drop-shot rig. The reason for using the drop-shot is that you can tie the hook anywhere from 2-4 inches up the line and keep it suspended above the bed where the fish are hovering. The particular lure that I prefer for this is the Jackall Crosstail Shad.

If you’ve never seen this lure, it doesn’t really look like much. It’s a four inch bait that doesn’t look at all like a shad, doesn’t have any appendages hanging off if it, no 3D eyes, no internal rattles or anything else remarkable looking. Kinda reminds me of when the Senko first came out with it’s amazing appearance. We all know how that one turned out! Yeah, now there probably isn’t a single pro out there who doesn’t have fourteen dozen of them or a similar style bait every time they are on the water.

Anyway, back to the Crosstail Shad. Once again I have to apologize for the lack of pictures here but I really had no way of taking any while I was fishing. This little bait, in spite of it’s plain jane appearance has something that just turn the bass on. Whether you’re using it for suspended fish on underwater humps or bed fishing or anything in between, it produces fish. Now just like any other smallish size lure the Jackall will catch a lot of small fish as well as bigger ones. The important thing is that it does catch fish!

A couple of items of note. The plastic used in the Crosstail Shad is soft and can be torn fairly easily. When this happens, and it will, just snip some of the head off, re-rig and keep fishin’. The other is that I have noticed a substantial difference when using scent versus not using scent. My choice here is the Fish Sticks Lure Enhancer in shad flavor.

Anyway, hope this helps ya’ll get some of those heavily pressured fish.

See ya’ on the water …
