Last week I gave you 3.5 reasons you should be using a wading staff when you’re fly fishing. Today, I want to give you my recommendation for a fantastic one that will get the job done like no other—the Simms wading staff.
Before we go any further, I will forewarn you…
The Simms wading staff is pricey. I completely understand if that turns you off. If you want a cheaper option, try an old ski pole, a stick on the side of the river, a golf club, or an umbrella.

The staff is made of anodized aluminum that gives you strength without feeling like it weighs 40 pounds.
It’s a nice 52 inches, and features a ski-pole grip that won’t slip from your hand.
It is collapsible. This is where the Simms wading staff differentiates itself from many of the others on the market. Instead of using bungee cords to hold the staff together, they use the Spectra® cable retractor.
Let me explain why this is so important.

Two big issues surface when you have a staff that uses bungee cords. They get stuck in the mud or rocks, and they fill with water like crazy.
When a bungee cord staff is stuck in the mud or rocks, the sections will pull apart when you try to pull it up. As the sections pull apart, they will then fill with water, making them a weight.
If the staff doesn’t lock into place very well, it will fill with water anyway—which will serve nicely to pull your wading belt down.

Again, I know the staff is expensive. That is the only place it loses points at all, but what you are paying for is the classic quality that Simms always delivers in their products.
If you don’t think it’s worth it, try buying a cheaper, collapsible staff and use that for a week or two. Chances are, you will want to return it, and give the best a shot.
Save yourself the trouble and just get the Simms wading staff from the start.
