A Touch Of Nail Polish For Custom Spoon Paint Jobs

In the past, we’ve detailed out our preparations for trout season. As it is getting later in the year, we start looking ahead.

That time is now upon us so, as usual, I got out the tackle box devoted to trout lures with the idea of taking inventory to see what I needed for the season.

If you’re anything like us, you would rather cast with a lure all day and get skunked, as opposed to employing the old bait and wait method.   [Read more…]

How To Catch More Fish, In Less Time, With Less Effort Today

Two things to get us started.

First, this is a long post, 1,022 words to be exact, but it will be worth it.

Second, I absolutely realize that the headline makes it sound like some crazy, infomercial snake oil designed to help you part with some of your hard earned cash—but it isn’t.

I am not talking about some magical bait or attractant, or some crazy new technique making the rounds on the professional tournaments. I am talking about a simple, time tested principle.

Pareto’s Principle, to be exact. [Read more…]

Saturday Fun: Fly Fishing Meme

I hope everyone has had a great week, and has a big weekend planned. Hopefully you are able to get out on the water, and do some fishing.

I was playing around creating a meme the other day, and wanted to share it with you. I’m pretty sure anyone who fly fishes can relate. Nonetheless, don’t get the haters get you down—keep fishing. [Read more…]

Berkley Sick Fish

Berkley has been coming out with new baits to add to their value priced Havoc series every year. By enlisting the services of some of the biggest names in tournament fishing, the Havoc series continues to be innovative in design while maintaining a very moderate pricing structure for everything in the series.

Possibly one of the most anticipated new baits is the Skeet’s 4” Sick Fish Swimbait. We were able to get a couple of these at ICAST and have been fishing them ever since.   [Read more…]

Boyd Duckett Takes Home Championship And Classic Berth In New York

Syracuse, New York– Boyd Duckett has a lot to be thankful for these days. The Demopolis, Alabama pro has a two week old son at home, a nice looking trophy and $100,000 from the Ramada Championship on Oneida, and now knows what he will be doing in February next year—fishing the Classic.

Before the tournament, Duckett was in 53rd place in the point standing, so a win was just about the only thing that would keep him from missing a second consecutive Classic. [Read more…]

Simms Wading Staff

Last week I gave you 3.5 reasons you should be using a wading staff when you’re fly fishing. Today, I want to give you my recommendation for a fantastic one that will get the job done like no other—the Simms wading staff.

Before we go any further, I will forewarn you…

The Simms wading staff is pricey. I completely understand if that turns you off. If you want a cheaper option, try an old ski pole, a stick on the side of the river, a golf club, or an umbrella.

If you want the best though, this is it, and I will tell you why. [Read more…]

Jacob Wheeler Becomes Youngest Ever Forrest Wood Cup Winner

Duluth GA— Just past the age where he can legally celebrate with an adult beverage, Jacob Wheeler has brought home the richest prize in tournament bass fishing.

It didn’t come easy, and it didn’t come from following the pack.

3.5 Reasons To Use A Wading Staff

I am way too cool to use a wading staff when I go fly fishing.

I’m young and athletic (for now), and I can sit back and have a chuckle at the “old dudes” trudging through the water with a goofy wading staff.

After a quick laugh to myself I get back to my fishing and ever so nimbly bound from rock to…SPLASH!

Damn it—now I look like an idiot.

I’ve learned a few of these lessons over the years fly fishing, and these days, won’t hit the water without a good staff. Here are 3.5 reasons you should do the same. [Read more…]

ICAST 2012: Berkley

Berkley has had a lot of success with their Havoc line and this year at the convention they are debuting some more products under the Havoc brand.

They have introduced the new Pit Chunk which is for all intents and purposes, a slimmed down, cut off version of the popular Pit Boss designed by Skeet Reese. Now, as opposed to biting off the end of one, you can get the chunk version to use as a jig-trailer.

Another new product is the Skeet Reese designed Sick Fish. This little swimbait will remind a lot of anglers of another bait that is similar in design with protruding fins and a paddle tail. Add 3D eyes and custom colors, you’ve got a bait worth giving a try. [Read more…]

ICAST 2012: Livingston Lures

Livingston Lures truly fit the bill of unique and out of the ordinary—which is what we were looking for at ICAST.

They didn’t just bring your standard baits to the table. They combine a unique use of cutting edge science with tried and true engineering to create something all their own.

Their trademark bait combines the use of sound (no, not just rattles!) with a proven topwater design.

Let’s take a look at three styles of baits that Livingston brought to the table. [Read more…]
