One component of fishing that can make a huge difference in everything from angler fatigue to hook up ratio, having the ability to present a bait properly, casting distance and accuracy as well as myriad other concerns is a good, balanced rod. Yes, the stick you’re using can, depending on which one you’re throwing, either… [Continue Reading]

Daiwa Kage Rod Review

Daiwa introduced their Tatula series of reels several years ago beginning with the original Tatula 100 and 100 Type R. We’ve had every major version update since then including the CT Type R and the SV. We obtained the new Tatula 100 some time last year and have been fishing with it ever since.

There are times when big topwater walking baits are key to getting bites while other situations may call for something a little less boisterous. One bait that you can use that still has a decent length to it but presents itself with more subtlety is the Berkley Drift Walker. This bait comes in ten colors… [Continue Reading]

The Spro BBZ-1 Rat 50, The Alpha Rodent

IMG_2751Our site is about fish—the pursuit of fish and the appreciation of fish. We take pictures of fish, videos of fish, and write about fish.

Today, we are talking about rats. Specifically, the Spro BBZ-1 Rat.

Winner of “Best New Hardbait” at ICAST 2014 and designed by Bill Siemantel, Spro pro-staffer, lure designer and famed big bass hunter; this bait brings together all his experience in one fish catching package.

We have been using rats—well, rat imitations—on the west coast for a number of years. Unfortunately they have been, up to this point, expensive, hand crafted, and difficult to find.

The BBZ-1 Rat 50 has broken the rules for a lure like this. It retails for a very reasonable $30 with two additional sizes that debuted at ICAST 2015 that will be less than the 50 size.

For the time being, we’re going to focus on the 50 and take a look at the spec’s for this bait. [Read more…]

The Jackall Pompadour, Style and Substance

IMG_2722Any discussion of new topwater baits has to include those that have taken not just a small step away from proven older designs but those manufacturers who have completely re-imagined a lure in such a way that it ushers in a new standard for an accepted genre of lures.

Such is the case with the Jackall Pompadour which debuted last year at ICAST.

The Pompadour is a 3 inch bait that weighs 3/4 of an ounce. It is a surface bait that uses two metal wings as opposed to a lip to make contact with the water causing it to behave somewhere between the old Crazy Crawler and a buzz bait.

This bait has a list of features that is impressive to say the least. We’re gonna have to go one at a time down the list so that we don’t miss anything ‘cause every design element is an integral part of making this bait so unique. [Read more…]

The Livingston Lures Walking Boss II, Not Just A Sequel

IMG_2706Stick baits, or spook style baits have been all the rage for the past several years but we are now seeing an older design resurface.

That of the old crazy crawler whose action was based on a cupped front lip that made the bait gurgle as it swam across the surface.

We’ve been fishing the Walking Boss II from Livingston Lures for the past few months which takes that old action but refines it for today.

The Walking Boss II is 4-5/8 in length with a weight of 15/16oz. This lure comes with a three hook configuration with the rear hook being dressed. The lip on the front of the bait is a clear plastic that when retrieved gives the bait its gurgling action. It also has a hinged rear segment that accentuates its side to side waggle.

Strike King KVD Swim N Shiner, More Than Meets The Eye

IMG_2761We’ve been fishing a bunch of new top-water baits lately but as every good angler knows, when you’re fishing top-water, you have to have a follow up bait.

There are times when bass will flat out miss a frog, spook or other bait. When this happens, you need to be rigged and ready to fire right back in there with something that will sink a little bit but still tempt a fish into striking.

Some folks like to use worms or paddle tail swimbaits or a whole host of other plastics. One of the baits that we have found that is very effective as a second chance bait is the Strike King KVD Swim N Shiner.

The Shiner comes in both 4 and 5 inch versions with the color choices identical for either size. The plastic used in making the bait is the Perfect Plastics formula that is rich in salt as well as having the caffeine scent infused to mask human scent and oils. [Read more…]

The Jackall Binksy, not your daddy’s popper

IMG_2718We’re still on our top-water kick as the weather is still ideal for that type of fishing. Yeah, when it’s hot, muggy and downright miserable during the day, we spend most of our fishing time either in the wee hours of the morning or the cooler hours of the evening.

When you focus on those low-light periods it helps to have a bait that can make a ruckus.

The Jackall Binksy is one of those baits that has a ton of built in features, can be fished multiple ways, is fun to use, is quality from stem to stern and flat our catches fish. [Read more…]

Faircloth Wins The Day, Martens Wins the Year

Todd-Faircloth-Wins-Elite-SeriesDetroit, Mich. — Drama was not the order of the day this weekend on Lake St. Clair. Instead, Todd Faircloth made steady, consistent improvements each day to take home his fifth B.A.S.S. career victory.

Faircloth brought a 22 pound, 2 ounce bag to the final weigh in. That was good to put him six pounds ahead of his nearest competitor. [Read more…]

Storm’s Arashi Rattling Wake-Crank, Wakin’ Up Big Bass

IMG_2728When the air temperatures in this neck of the woods starting climbing into triple digits we go out with one thing in mind, top-water bass.

However, there are times when bass are just a little shy about hitting the surface. There are niche baits designed specifically for this situation. Yup, we’re talking about wake baits.

Today we’re going to look at the Storm Arashi Rattling Wake-Crank to see how this new addition to the Arashi family performs. [Read more…]

Redlands Community Picnic & Fishing Derby, a Great Place to Start

IMG_0432Since we started ManVersusFish.com, we’ve had the privilege of covering some of the biggest events in fishing.

While each of those experiences have left us with memories that we will cherish all our lives, there are other, smaller events at tiny venues that have been some of the most heartwarming.

One of those was the Redlands Community Picnic & Fishing Derby. This event was held at a tiny local park named Ford Park on June 27, 2015.

The Derby was organized by Redlands Sunrise Rotary and Rotary Club of Redlands as well as being sponsored by Maupin Financial Advisors. Other businesses came out to support the Derby with sponsor booths, vendor booths and lent a hand to the young anglers who often had no experience fishing. [Read more…]

Ground and Pound with Sufix 832 Braid Camo

With summer herIMG_2732e, fishing the thick stuff is in full swing which means using some heavy line for specific applications. Today we’re talking about pitchin’ and flippin’ around stick ups, cattails or other heavy vegetation that bass tend to inhabit.

When we’re literally putting our baits in and/or up against heavy cover like this, we prefer to use a heavy braid.

We had not ever had the experience of fishing Sufix 832 – that is until now.
