One component of fishing that can make a huge difference in everything from angler fatigue to hook up ratio, having the ability to present a bait properly, casting distance and accuracy as well as myriad other concerns is a good, balanced rod. Yes, the stick you’re using can, depending on which one you’re throwing, either… [Continue Reading]

Daiwa Kage Rod Review

Daiwa introduced their Tatula series of reels several years ago beginning with the original Tatula 100 and 100 Type R. We’ve had every major version update since then including the CT Type R and the SV. We obtained the new Tatula 100 some time last year and have been fishing with it ever since.

There are times when big topwater walking baits are key to getting bites while other situations may call for something a little less boisterous. One bait that you can use that still has a decent length to it but presents itself with more subtlety is the Berkley Drift Walker. This bait comes in ten colors… [Continue Reading]

The 2019 Bassmaster Classic Marks the End of an Era

The 2019 Bassmaster Classic was a weird one.

Sure, Ott DeFoe took home the victory, and was the 4th hometown angler in 6 years to do it. And of course, there was plenty of excitement and drama on the water and on the stage.

But one couldn’t ignore a strangeness as well.

The Winning Lures From the 2019 Bassmaster Classic

Across the field, crankbaits, Rat-L Traps, and an assortment of jigs seemed to own the day.

2019 Champion Ott DeFoe was in veritable lock-step with that assessment. Let’s get a closer look at some of the baits he used to bring home the big win.

DeFoe Wins One for the Homecrowd

Knoxville, TN – It seems we have a new era in bass fishing.

For as long as I can remember, it was damn near impossible for a hometown boy to win a Classic on his home lake. With 4 of the past 6 winners doing just that, it’s becoming the norm.

Jacob Wheeler takes the overall lead on Day 2 of the 2019 Bassmaster Classic

Knoxville TN – It was again a Tennessean that held the lead on Day 2 of the 2019 Bassmaster Classic, but not the same one as yesterday.

Day 2, and the overall lead for the tournament, belonged to Jacob Wheeler on Saturday. Not only did he end the day 24 hours away from winning the biggest tournament in bass fishing, but he did it in a very strange way.

Brian Latimer’s FLW Tour Winning Baits From Lake Seminole

Brian Latimer took home his first trophy from the FLW tour a few days ago.

Today let’s take a look at a few of the baits that put fish in his boat and some money in his pocket.

Bill Lewis MR-6

Bill Lewis MR-6

Bill Lewis is one of the OGs of the crankbait game.

My first exposure to using a hard plastic bait as a kid was the original Rat-L Trap. I had no idea what I was doing, but somehow managed to still put a few on my thumb.

The MR-6 is a 6 foot runner designed in conjunction with our friend Mark Daniels Jr.

It runs true out of the box, has solid construction that holds up to bite after bite, and produces a low-pitch knocking sound to attract fish in dirty water conditions.

With a wide variety of colors available, and a very attractive price point, this is one that can fill your tackle box without breaking the bank.

Z-man Palmetto Bugz

Latimer’s big winner was the Z-man Palmetto BugZ.

If you’ve read anything we’ve written over the past couple of years, you know we’ve been high on Z-man. The bottom line is they just put out great baits that last surprisingly long for soft-plastics.

Brian flipped his Palmetto using a 1/2 ounce weight. It was a straight forward, no frills approach that ended up winning the tournament.

The Palmetto BugZ come in a five pack.

Brian Latimer Wins FLW Event on Lake Seminole

Brian Latimer has been around the scene for a while, but over the weekend on Lake Seminole, he took the spotlight for himself.

While his tournament total of 80 pounds, 15 ounces is impressive, it was only enough to edge out Braxton Setzer by 2 pounds, 1 ounce. The field was definitely on his heals, but he handled the pressure like a champ.

A Brief Look at Lake Seminole

This weekend, the FLW Tour will make it’s third stop of the year and Lake Seminole will be the host.

A long time favorite fishery of those of us in the southeast, Lake Seminole is nevertheless not quite the big name as some of our other fisheries.

With that in mind, let’s take a quick look at this fishery and what we can likely expect over the weekend.

Paul Mueller Takes a Big Win on Lake Lanier

Gwinnett County Ga – The Bassmaster Elite Series blew into my home town over the weekend for a stop at fabled Lake Lanier. Shifting weather patterns and intermittent rain and wind weren’t enough to keep the bag limits low. This was a spotted bass tournament, but it was a big one.

Zman Weedless Eye Jig Review

Zman Weedless Eye Jig

One of the techniques that has gained enormous popularity in the past several years is throwing a swimbait. For most anglers, the easiest, most effective way to do this is to get the solid body, boot tail version, put it on a jighead, throw it out and let the lure do the work.

It’s an easy way to present a natural looking lure and it catches fish year round. Of course, one of the components you’ll have to decide on is which jighead to use with which swim bait.
