One component of fishing that can make a huge difference in everything from angler fatigue to hook up ratio, having the ability to present a bait properly, casting distance and accuracy as well as myriad other concerns is a good, balanced rod. Yes, the stick you’re using can, depending on which one you’re throwing, either… [Continue Reading]

Daiwa Kage Rod Review

Daiwa introduced their Tatula series of reels several years ago beginning with the original Tatula 100 and 100 Type R. We’ve had every major version update since then including the CT Type R and the SV. We obtained the new Tatula 100 some time last year and have been fishing with it ever since.

There are times when big topwater walking baits are key to getting bites while other situations may call for something a little less boisterous. One bait that you can use that still has a decent length to it but presents itself with more subtlety is the Berkley Drift Walker. This bait comes in ten colors… [Continue Reading]

Spro McStick

Packaging

Yes it’s still jerkbait weather around here and we have been fishing the new Spro Mcstick 95 every time we have gone. This bait is 3.75 inches long and weighs just 3/8 of an ounce. It is designed to suspend in the 3 – 5 foot range allowing the angler to target some of those shallow or suspended bass.

I realize that getting out on the water when weather conditions are less than optimal has its own challenges, but there is one advantage you aren’t fighting for space on the water! This is enough incentive for us to get out and get to it!

Aqua Vu Fish TV 7 Underwater Viewing System

Here is a product that I believe is one of the coolest things you can have on your boat, or even off the dock, on your next fishing trip. If you’ve never seen the Aqua Vu TV 7, you are really in for a treat the first time you fire it up, and start taking a look around the water.

The picture you will get of what is happening below the surface of the water is, in a word, stunning.

I literally thought it was some kind of demo video loop playing by mistake the first time I saw one—it’s that brilliant. [Read more…]

Zerek Rocker Vib Lipless Crankbait

Zerek Rocker Vib Packaging

Lipless crankbaits are one of those staple lures that we all carry but don’t often think much about in the cold winter months. This can be a mistake though as there are days when the bass, in spite of the chilly weather, will absolutely crush these lures.

With that in mind, we picked up some of the new Zerek Rocker Vib’s to give a go around some of our local waters.  [Read more…]

Hybrid Bass

On a recent trip, a friend and I got into an amazing school of hybrid bass.

My friend hasn’t been fishing that long, so after about an hour or so, and us each catching a few, he finally asked what type of fish it was. He’d caught largemouth before, and had seen stripers and smallies on TV, but this one was new to him.

He said he had heard before of white bass, and wondered if that was what we were pulling in with such regularity. After I explained exactly what a hybrid bass is, it occurred to me that others might also have the same question. [Read more…]

Five Books You Should Read When You Can’t Get On The Water

There is nothing I would rather be doing than standing in the middle of a river, double-hauling to some cagey brown trout.

Or trolling around looking for a monster largemouth with a drop shot rig tied on—but, let’s face it, you can’t always get out on the water. Life gets in the way, work gets in the way, and heck, sometimes Mother Nature herself tells you no.

I’m such a fishing addict that when I can’t be fishing, I’m reading about fishing.

Here’s a look at five awesome books you should have on your book shelf—just in case you can’t get out and do the real thing. [Read more…]

Get Ready For The Bass Pro Shops Trade In Event!

Hey gang, just wanted to drop a quick reminder on everyone that one of the annual events that we always look forward to is about to happen. The reel trade in event at your local Bass Pro Shops will be held during the Spring Fishing Classic.

Depending on your reel of choice, you can save a nice little chunk of change. We always try to get there the first day as soon as the store opens to get the best selection. One little hint here, it tends to be more efficient to know what you’re after before you get there or at least have your selection narrowed down to a few possibilities. This event does tend to draw a crowd so the sooner the better.  [Read more…]
