The Jackall SK-Pop Grande, Small but Loaded for Bass

IMG_2490The topwater bite is really starting to heat up in this neck of the woods so we always have several styles of baits ready to go. One of those is a popper.

Like any genre of lures, having different sizes, colors and actions is the key to maximizing the amount of bites you get. Obviously, it helps to have the ability to present the fish with an alternative when they get shy or turn off on a specific plug.

One of our go to poppers is the Jackall SK-Pop Grande. It has caught a ton of fish for us over the last few seasons.

The SK-Pop is on the smallish side in spite of its name weighing in at 5/16 and measuring only 2.6 inches in length. However, this little bait packs a lot of features into the diminutive frame.

KVD Does It Again, Hackney Dq’ed, Cayuga Gets Wild

Kevin-VanDam-Wins-Cayuga-LakeUnion Springs, NY — KVD needed to come from behind to get it done, but the living legend did so to take his second Elite Series trophy in six weeks.

Coming into Sunday, VanDam was in third place and two pounds out of the lead. 15 pounds, seven ounces later, KVD hoisted his 22nd Elite Series trophy, further extending the record he set in May. [Read more…]

The Phenix Vibrator Jig 3, why it’s breaking the mold

IMG_3003While we were down in San Diego we happened to run across the folks from Phenix Baits. They had a booth at the Fred Hall Boat and Tackle Show and were very engaging where discussing their baits was concerned.

We were particularly taken with the Phenix Vibrator Jig Version 3. The reasons were several.

The shape of the head of the jig was rounded in a way that was evident it would slide through grass well, the quality of the skirting, the precise cut of the blade, the components that all attach to the blade, the different blade colors, the conical bait keeper on the shank of the hook, the sharpness of the hook and last but not least, the color and weight choices.

Yeah, that’s a run on sentence but all of those features are immediately evident as soon as you pick up the bait.

Takahiro Omori Takes It All At Wheeler Lake

Omori Wins Bassmaster Elite Series on Wheeler LakeDecatur, Al— If tournament bass fishing were basketball, Omori’s win at Wheeler Lake was a buzzer beater. With a final day bag weighing 25 pounds, 3 ounces, the trophy belonged to him.

After a slow start, and a bag weighing just south of 11 pounds, Omori found himself in 72nd place at the end of the first day. Friday was kinder to him, and the 23 pounds, 3 ounces he weighed in put him in 4th place—and well within striking distance of a win.

Gear up with the Jackall Giron

One of the baits that is often overlooked for use during this pre-spawn, spawn and post-spawn time frame is one of our favorites, a hard bodied swimbait, the Jackall Giron.

Rapala’s Pro Series Tungsten Fly Jig is One Hot Little Bug

IMG_2812Over the course of the last several months, we’ve had the opportunity to target trout along with panfish.

We want to show you one more multi-species lure before we leave this genre; the Rapala Pro Series Tungsten Fly Jig. This is another jig that was introduced for use under the ice but it has so many more applications that we still haven’t exhausted all of its capabilities.

You might think that a fly is just a fly. Well, not really. The Fly Jig has produced trout, crappie, bluegill, sunfish and bass for us. Perhaps the secret lies in its simplicity. While it looks like any other well tied fly, the action, sink rate, castability and components separate it from the pack.

We obtained the 1/16 in two colors, Glow Chartreuse and Metallic Rainbow. The Glow Chartreuse is fantastic in stained or off color water while the Metallic Rainbow is a clear water killer.

Intex Excursion 4 – A Cheaper Way To Fish

IMG_1129We talk a great deal about strategies, techniques, presentations etc., to catch more fish. However, one astute reader of ours posed a great question. That being, “Do all of these strategies work from shore since I don’t have a boat and will they work on small water?”.

 

After our answer to our reader, we started doin’ a little thinkin’. No, not everybody can afford a boat and all that ownership entails so what are the other alternatives?

Well, there are kayak’s but those can set you back a couple grand by the time you outfit them. There are paddle boards but again, they start at above $500 and go up from there. There are small pond type boats that can run as much as $2k or more. There are float tubes but with those, you have to get waders, fins and other paraphernalia that again will get you up to around $500 if not more and you can’t fish with a friend from these.

Is there a functional alternative for around $100 for the budget minded angler that really is all inclusive? We started there to see what we could find and our efforts pointed us to one class of water craft that we simply hadn’t considered. Inflatables. Yup, sure enough, you can get one of these for just over $100 with everything included in the package. The boat, a pump and oars.

The Bassmaster Classic – Weighing In On The Business of Bass

Here we are a few days away from the Bassmaster Classic 2016. It seems as though it was just a moment ago when we were watching Randy Howell hoist the trophy in Alabama followed by his press conference where he revealed his winning baits.

Then last year, Casey Ashley got to the top of the bass fishing world and like his predecessors, got to experience the incredible ride that is being the current Classic champion. He too sat in front of the press and held court on his victory.

The Classic is a life changing event for that angler who is fortunate enough to walk away with the trophy; there is no denying that.
